Summary: His life turned around the moment he met Yunho.
Yunho’s grip weakened, and Jaejoong took that as a sign to run.
He pulled his wrist out of Yunho’s grasp and made for the door, but once again, Yunho was faster. He immediately enveloped Jaejoong into the comforting warmth of his arms and hugged him tight, refusing to let go.
“Yunho, please.” Jaejoong murmured as he tried to fight against Yunho’s grasp, “Don’t do this. You deserve better.” He pleaded, “Let me go.”
“Jaejoong -“
Yunho’s arms fell to his sides, and Jaejoong took a step forward. He was afraid to meet Yunho’s eyes, but he did so anyway. He saw the hurt reflected in the other man’s eyes, and it made him feel guilty.
Jaejoong pushed the feeling aside - he was doing the right thing. It would be better for Yunho in the long run, he was sure.
“I’m sorry.” Jaejoong breathed out, his words airier and lighter than usual. “I shouldn’t have bothered you.”
“Don’t leave.”
“I’ll see you again sometime, okay Yunho?” Jaejoong continued as he ignored Yunho’s request. “Take care of yourself -“
“You can’t just do this.” Yunho argued as he took a step forward, “I just told you I love you, and you’re going to abandon me?” he questioned, his voice shaking and his hurt radiating off him intensely. “I love you.”
The three words made Jaejoong flinch, but he couldn’t take another step back because Yunho’s demanding gaze had him rooted to his spot. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.
“You’re delicate right now, I understand.” Yunho continued as he calmed himself down and reached out for Jaejoong, “You’re hurt, lost and confused…but Jaejoong, please, I love you. I’ll take care of you.”
Jaejoong’s heart swelled with joy and guilt which put him at a loss with what to do next. He wanted so much to let Yunho take care of him, but Jaejoong knew that he couldn’t become overly dependent on the other man.
There were things that he would have to take care of on his own.
“I have to take care of myself first Yunho.” Jaejoong said finally as he voiced out his thoughts. “I’ll have to take care of myself on my own for a while, and I don’t want you to wait for me, because -“
“You can’t convince me otherwise,” Yunho insisted as he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against Jaejoong’s lips. He withdrew, and his breath ghosted against Jaejoong’s face, “Because I love you, and I hope, that one day, you’ll tell me that you feel the same way.”
Jaejoong felt the urge to cry, but he held back his tears.
Yunho was too good, too wonderful, and he was more than he felt he deserved. It was as if for some reason, fate had decided to be kind for a change and had allowed for Yunho to fall in love with him.
He’d never felt so blessed before.
“I’ll drive you home.” Yunho murmured before he left Jaejoong for a few seconds to grab his car keys. When he came back, he stared at Jaejoong in realization.
“The accident you were in…”
“Wasn’t an accident.” Jaejoong replied as he watched Yunho come closer. He shut his eyes and breathed out quietly, “I crashed my car on purpose. I survived, and just got my license suspended for drunk driving. I’m not proud of -“
“I won’t ever let you reach that state ever again.” Yunho said determinedly as he reached out and held Jaejoong’s hand. He squeezed tightly, “I know you want time…and I’m sure that means distance as well, but I’ll be here for you.”
Jaejoong couldn’t hold himself back, and he immediately wrapped his arms around Yunho tightly. He buried his face into Yunho’s chest, inhaling the scent of what was left of his cologne and the scent that was distinctly Yunho.
Despite all the words he’d said previously, deep down, Jaejoong knew he couldn’t ever possibly leave Yunho permanently. Even though he’d grown to be careful with his feelings, his attachment to Yunho was stronger than anything he’d had for anyone else.
He loved Yunho, and he would tell him - eventually.
o-o-o
Yunho had made Jaejoong promise one thing before he let himself leave Jaejoong alone in front of his apartment - he didn’t want Jaejoong living alone anymore.
So, Jaejoong had complied and asked the first person he knew would say yes on such short notice.
Sohyun.
Her husband was abroad, and it would be that way for two more months, so she’d agreed immediately. Of course, she’d noticed that something was wrong with Jaejoong, so that had only further given her reason to say yes despite such short notice.
And it was partially because of Yunho that Jaejoong was presently icing cupcakes with his nieces and pretending to not notice that most of the icing was going into their mouths rather than the cupcakes.
“Uncle Joongie.” Eunyoung pouted and tugged on his shirt, “I want nap now. Nap! I want a nap!” she tugged harder, and Jaejoong smiled kindly as he placed down the bowl of icing and turned to her.
She was covered in icing, and if she went to bed in such a state, he was fairly sure she’d be covered in ants by the time she woke up.
“I think you should take a -“
“Joongie! What happened to them?”
He turned around and raised his hands in apology as Sohyun stormed into the kitchen and gathered her sticky children. She frowned at him, “You’re absolutely terrible! They’re such a mess.”
Jaejoong laughed, “I’m sorry.”
“Aish, the things I have to deal with.” Sohyun placed her hands on her waist and looked down at her children, “Just because Uncle Joongie’s too caught up in his own drama to watch over you guys properly -“
“Hey!”
“It doesn’t mean that you can abuse that.” She finished, “Go to the bathroom. I’ll follow you two there.”
The girls ran off, giggling as usual, and Sohyun walked up to Jaejoong. She took one of the cupcakes and examined it carefully, “You were always better at baking than I ever was.”
Jaejoong smiled, “It’s one of the few things I can do -“
Sohyun frowned and held the cupcake threateningly, “Please, save me from hearing any of those self-deprecating comments. I’ve told you time and time again Jaejoong, you can’t keep saying things like that, especially when they’re not true.”
“I’m -“
“There’s no need to apologize about it, just make sure you don’t do it again.” She took a bite of the cupcake, “God, it’s delicious and absolutely terrible for my hips, I’m sure.” Sohyun then immediately turned back to her more serious mood, “Anyway, it’s been a month Jaejoong...so I want you to explain things to me later.”
Jaejoong remained silent and looked down at the cupcake he was icing. He swallowed hard, “I’ll...okay. I’ll tell you as soon as the girls are asleep.”
“Okay.”

After the girls were put to bed, he and his sister were finally alone. Jaejoong cupped his mug with his hands, enjoying the warmth of the tea against the coldness of his palms. It was raining again, and the sight of the rain rolling down the kitchen windows reminded him of the night Yunho had kissed him against the kitchen sink.
It also reminded him of how much he missed Yunho.
“So, did you and your boyfriend break up?” Sohyun asked, snapping Jaejoong out his thoughts with her question. “I assume that’s the reason why you suddenly asked me if you could live here for a bit.”
“No…I’m here for other reasons.” Jaejoong murmured, “I…I talked to him about my accident a few months ago, and eventually, I decided that it would be best for me to take a break and sort things out.”
“And that’s why you’ve decided to play babysitter?” Sohyun questioned curiously, as she rested her chin on the palm of her hand. “It’s been…a month since you’ve started living here. Has it helped you at all?”
“I think so.” Jaejoong replied with a shrug, “I haven’t been as lonely, and the girls are always talkative and they keep my mind off of myself. I haven’t been particularly sad lately, so that’s always a good thing.”
“That’s good.”
Sohyun reached across the table and took hold of one of Jaejoong’s hands. “You still have a lot of work to do. About your accident…” she trailed off, “I know there’s more to that than you ever told any of us, and it’s fine if you don’t say anything more about it. Just put it behind you.”
“Sohyun, I -“
“No, listen. That night at the hospital, Yoochun, Junsu, Changmin and I all talked about it, and seeing you now…I can tell that we were right.” She smiled sadly, “Don’t ever do that again, okay Jaejoong? There are people who love you, and who are here for you.”
“I -“ Jaejoong felt the tears building up again, so he fought them back. He blinked furiously, but before he knew it, his sister had crossed the distance between them to wrap her arms around him.
He cried onto her shoulder, and she kept her arms around him, murmuring quiet words of reassurances and fighting back the insecurities that had plagued him for years.

Jaejoong carried his bag of groceries in one hand and stared down at his phone in the other. He stared at Yunho’s name and considered calling him. He looked up, and as the signal turned green he began to walk.
Unfortunately, because he was so focused on his phone’s screen, Jaejoong bumped into another woman on the street. His plastic bag fell out of his hand and the woman’s bag fell as well.
“I’m so sorry!” Jaejoong apologized profusely, picking up the woman’s bag before he picked up his own, “I should’ve been -“
A car honked, and he quickly led the woman to the other side of the street, carrying her bag for her. As soon as they were on the sidewalk, Jaejoong handed it back to her with an apologetic smile.
“Again, I’m so sorry.” He muttered, bowing low.
The woman shook her head and laughed, “It’s fine. You looked busy.” She waved him off and glanced at the phone in her hand, her eyes lingering on the screen before she handed it back to him, “I think this is yours.”
“Oh, thank you.” Jaejoong said as he took his phone back. He glanced back at the signal, “Well - I should go now. I have to cross the street.”
“Of course, and really, you didn’t have to apologize.” The woman said with a bright smile that looked vaguely familiar.
Jaejoong stared at her, trying to find some reason for the familiarity, but couldn’t. He shook his head, and after smiling at her, he began to make his way across the street pushing that thought to the far corners of his mind.
o-o-o
As Jaejoong turned to his sister’s street, he paused and stared at the car that was parked in front of the house. A smile made its way across his face, and he quickened his steps the moment he recognized the person pacing in front of the car.
His heart pounded in his chest, and the person’s name left his lips as soon as he was only a few steps away. “Yunho!”
Yunho turned his head, and before he could even register Jaejoong’s presence, the latter had already latched himself onto Yunho. Jaejoong wrapped his arms around Yunho’s neck and laughed, breathless and elated.
“I’ve missed you - I’m sorry for not calling more often.” Jaejoong murmured before he pressed his lips against Yunho’s. He could feel Yunho smile against his lips, and Jaejoong could feel himself get happier by the second.
It was amazing how Yunho’s presence changed him completely, how Yunho had managed to improve his day just by appearing.
It’d been stupid to alienate him.
Jaejoong chuckled as Yunho turned him around and pressed him against the car door, deepening the kiss in broad daylight. He opened his mouth willingly, and Jaejoong ran his hands through Yunho’s hair, cherishing the feel of the soft brown strands.
Yunho got particularly carried away - his mouth had already moved onto Jaejoong’s neck, and Jaejoong squirmed underneath him. After a particularly rough bite, Jaejoong groaned and began to push Yunho away.
“My nieces are going to come home any second.” Jaejoong murmured apologetically as soon as he managed to get Yunho’s mouth off his neck. He chuckled and leaned up to press a kiss against Yunho’s jaw. “You can come inside with me.”
Yunho glanced at the house behind them, “Are you -“
“Uncle Joongie!”
The high pitched squeals broke them out of their world, and Jaejoong quickly turned his head to see his nieces running up to them. He felt Yunho move away, but he took hold of his hand before he could move away, and led him to the girls.
The girls stopped and watched as Yunho and Jaejoong approached. Jaejoong quickly squeezed Yunho’s hand reassuringly and glanced at him, a supportive smile on his face, before he turned to face the girls.
He knelt down, “Hi.” Jaejoong smiled at the two of them before he glanced up at Yunho, who was shifting awkwardly beside them. He turned his attention back to the girls, “Do you know who this is?”
“No!” Horan answered loudly, being the more vocal and outspoken twin. She frowned at Yunho while her sister just raised her dark brown eyes and stared at Yunho with a curious look on her face.
Jaejoong straightened up and took hold of Yunho’s hand. “This is my special friend.” He smiled at Yunho, “He’s quite tall isn’t he?” Jaejoong glanced back at the girls and winked, “You can call him -“
“You can call me Yunho.”
Eunyoung smiled shyly and took a step forward, “I think Uncle Joongie likes you.” She whispered, but it came out much louder than intended, and all of them heard it. Horan burst out into giggles, took hold of her sister’s hand, and began to run to the house, shouting for their mother to meet Uncle Joongie’s special friend.
Jaejoong blushed and glanced at Yunho, “Well, it’s inescapable now. You’ll have to meet my sister too. You don’t mind…do you?”
“I -“ Yunho forced a smile, “What if she doesn’t like me?” he asked, and despite the smile, the nervousness in his voice was evident.
Jaejoong took hold of Yunho’s hand and led him to the doorstep. He stopped and made Yunho look at him, “She’ll love you, okay? Don’t worry.”
“Jaejoong, maybe this isn’t -“
“Yunho, I love you.” Jaejoong said, his voice shaky as he tried to hide the nervousness that had come as soon as the words had come out of his mouth. He smiled, “I love you…and I want you to meet my sister, because she’s an important person in my life. Trust me, she’ll love you too.”
Yunho’s look softened, “Jaejoong…”
“Let’s…do this right. You deserve it.” Jaejoong murmured as he raised his eyes to return Yunho’s gaze. “I’m going to be…I want to be perfect - for you.”
“You already are.” Yunho replied before he leaned down to kiss Jaejoong.
Jaejoong’s eyes fluttered shut and his heart pounded wildly in his chest, Yunho’s words resounding loudly in his ears, and he found himself believing in them, believing that he was perfect for Yunho.
And he was glad, because if there was one thing he was sure of, it was that Yunho was perfect for him as well.
