Light a candle, curse the glare...

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. It is also Winter Solstice, in a purely natural way. Because it is Solstice, it is also Yule, the long night. In 4 days, it will be Christmas.  All of these events are about the division of dark and light - Solstice is perhaps not spiritual, but it prompts the others inevitably. So, tonight, and always, to the extent that you can, bring light to your corner of the world. As my pastor in Ottawa used to say "Light a candle, and tell the darkness 'I beg to differ'".

Tonight, we bought a Christmas tree, and it stands in the corner, festooned with lights, quietly differing with darkness.
