Character Information
General
Canon Source: Loveless
Canon Format: Manga
Character's Name: Ritsuka Aoyagi
Character's Age: 12 13
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. Ritsuka's youth is one of the primary subjects of Loveless - how he matures and deals with a world where adults and children are so very separate - yet he's given a lot of adult things to deal with. He is mature - described by others as being more mature than many of the adult characters - and he's been dealing with the world of Fighters and Sacrifices, and its gruesome results, such as death, mutilation and psychological torture. While he has a somewhat physically affectionate relationship with Soubi, it's in the developmental stages and is handled tastefully, and is an illustration of their strange dynamic as much as anything else. In short, Ritsuka has aspects of him that are very much a typical sixth-grader's, but he handles things with an adult's intelligence and maturity. He'll be able to handle the environment of Siren's Pull with strength and grace, and is level-headed enough not to run headfirst into trouble.
What form will your character's NV take? It will take the form of his flip-phone, the one that Soubi gave him.
Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Ritsuka is half of a Fighter/Sacrifice team - he is a Sacrifice for the team called 'Loveless'. His true name is written somewhere on his body, but it is not known where. In the world of Loveless, these pairs engage in spell battles using words as weapons. The Fighter is responsible for the offensive, while the Sacrifice provides more of the 'heart' of the team, and takes all of the battle damage, which manifest as restrictive bonds or physical injury. If a Sacrifice is destroyed, the battle is lost. In a lot of ways, the battle is dependent on a Sacrifice's ability to endure, since most Fighters are driven to protect their Sacrifices - and Ritsuka, in spite of being new and untrained, can endure quite a bit of pain and restriction. A Sacrifice's presence during a fight also means the Fighter is at his most powerful - when a Sacrifice is not present, the Fighter's power is halved. A Fighter's power is also halved if the Fighter and Sacrifice do not have the same true name, ie, they are part of different fighting teams - so it's an important fact that Fighters and Sacrifices are typically a matched set. However, Ritsuka currently fights with Soubi, who is not part of the Loveless team - it's unclear as of yet who the Fighter of Loveless is. Recently, Ritsuka claimed Soubi as his Fighter, which means, should his true Fighter emerge, he would be unusual and have two Fighters on his team.
As a Sacrifice he is also able to call on his Fighter, or use his power to name a blank Fighter as his own, which is what he has done in the case of Soubi, who was a blank Fighter who once belonged to Beloved. He is also learning to sense his Fighter and call on him, and can see the strings of light that connect Fighter to Sacrifice.
In essence, Ritsuka's abilities are more or less negligible without the presence of a Fighter on his team. However, considering the odd powers his brother, who is also a Sacrifice, possesses, it would not be surprising if canon develops that he has other powers - which would then be addressed in the appropriate fashion. At this point, however, he is more or less useless without Soubi to fight for him.
While it couldn't really be considered an ability, Ritsuka also has cat ears and a tail - everyone in his world who is a virgin has them, and they disappear once virginity is lost. Though it is not explicitly stated, I assume the cat ears grant their owners better hearing than humans without them.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: When Ritsuka was 10 years old (so, 2 years ago in canon), he suffered a loss of memory and change in personality, for reasons as-of-yet unknown. He went from being a popular and vivacious student with only a passing interest in academics, to being a very successful student who didn't get along well with his peers. This change in personality (being replaced with a 'new Ritsuka' to speak) appeared to be the catalyst of his mother, Misaki's, insanity. She hated 'new' Ritsuka utterly and would often play mind games with him, such as cooking him meals and berating him for liking or disliking something the 'real Ritsuka' liked, but even worse, she would often beat him and throw things at him. Only Seimei, his older brother, seemed to take any stock in what was happening to Ritsuka. He comforted Ritsuka over what happened, did his best to comfort his brother after the abuse, and served as a protector when he could - something their father did not do.
But though Seimei doted on his brother, it seems he was also not free from manipulating and abusing the child: he threw out things Ritsuka valued, and it's implied he killed Ritsuka's pet fish. Though Ritsuka does not view it so, Seimei himself states that Misaki had Ritsuka 'just for him', and seems to treat him like an object. Still, Ritsuka adored Seimei, and Seimei doted on him. He even told Ritsuka his true name: Beloved, a bond he shared only with his brother.
When he entered grade six, Ritsuka's world turned upside-down. A corpse was found, burnt to the point of being unrecognizable, sitting in his classroom desk. The dental records identified the corpse as Seimei's. Without Seimei's protection, Misaki's abuse spun out of control.
Ritsuka's life would turn upside-down again on his first day at a new school. Not only did he immediately alienate himself from 99% of the class by sticking up for a bullied girl and calling his classmates out on it, but a tall and handsome stranger was waiting for him outside the school, smoking a cigarette The man introduced himself as Soubi, and said he was a friend of Seimei's. He was Seimei's Fighter, and, at Seimei's request, he now belonged to Ritsuka. Though Ritsuka was skeptical at first, he was happy for the connection to Seimei and took him to the park to 'make memories' ie, take photographs. They were attacked, and Soubi was forced into an unfair fight with no one serving as his Sacrifice.
Thus Ritsuka was quickly brought into the world Seimei once lived in, and began to learn what it meant to be Soubi's Sacrifice. Though Soubi promised he would do anything for Ritsuka, even claiming to love him (and getting awfully friendly in his physical affection), he would not tell Ritsuka certain things about Seimei, because it was against Seimei's orders. Ritsuka decided to join forces with Soubi to uncover Seimei's secrets, and the secrets of the Septimal Moon, a shadowy organization that was responsible for Seimei's death, and was now after Ritsuka and Soubi.
As Ritsuka struggled with his mother's spiraling mental state and more average things like the drama of sixth-grade friendship, he grew closer to discovering the truth about Seimei's death, following a path of clues Seimei left - but each step he took found more questions than answers. Everyone who knew Seimei seemed to find him frightening and cruel, and even Soubi, who was obedient to him, seemed to fear him. When confronted what with others saw as the truth about Seimei, Ritsuka grew even more stubborn in his love of his brother, even as he befriended other Fighters and Sacrifices and began to understand their world more. He didn't know that Seimei had somehow faked his death, and was orchestrating a plot that would bring them back together, though not through pleasant means.
Seimei sent his new Fighter (he was able to discard Soubi because he was a blank Fighter) to manipulate Ritsuka's mother into trying to kill him. Completely devoid of reason, Misaki tied Ritsuka to a chair and refused to let him leave the house. When Soubi turned up to free Ritsuka, he met Seimei's new Fighter, who contacted Seimei on the phone just to prove he was still alive, and that Soubi seemed to no longer be needed.
Soubi broke down and begged Ritsuka to run away somewhere. Ritsuka convinced him to stay, saying they'd both do they best they could. However, soon after Ritsuka learned the location of the people he held responsible for Seimei's death. He convinced Soubi to take him to Gora - a mountainous region, and the location of both the school for Fighters and Sacrifices Seimei and Soubi trained at, and Septimal Moon. The trip was riddled with its own problems. Soubi's friend Kio insisted on coming along, and he imparted a very vivid vision of the cruel bastard Seimei really was. He explained that Seimei mutilated Soubi, which Ritsuka ordered Soubi to confirm by asking him to strip in a parking lot. The more Ritsuka listened to Kio, the more Seimei's bizarre, possessive behavior fell into light.
Soubi and Ritsuka entered the school to get some answers, but just as they were beginning to participate in some routine training activities, the power went out and Seimei began an assault on the school. He broke in and got into a fight with Soubi's abusive former teacher, Ritsu, who never forgave Seimei for mutilating something he worked so hard to groom and train. Seimei stabbed Ritsu's eyes out and wrote Ritsuka, I'm back on the walls.
Meanwhile, Ritsuka found he was actually able to sense Soubi and call him to him, and so Soubi entered a duel with Seimei's true Fighter, Nisei. During the fight it was revealed that Soubi was not Seimei's fighter, but an 'impostor', so Ritsuka announced that Soubi was, indeed the fighter of Loveless, claiming Soubi as his own. With that, their power increased incredibly and Nisei was defeated, particularly since Seimei did not answer his call and come aid him.
Ritsuka and Soubi went on to find Seimei where their friends, Youji and Natsuo, had cornered him into a fight. Ritsuka realized that Soubi and Seimei had lied to him, but in spite of the situation, threw himself into Seimei's arms. The conflict quickly dissolved into chaos, with Youji and Natsuo both ready to kill Seimei, Ritsuka insisting that they didn't, and Soubi under orders by his teacher to retrieve Seimei alive. In the confusion, Seimei began to speak, uttering some strange sort of word spell all his own. He seemed to have Ritsuka in some kind of painful thrall, telling him the story of when Ritsuka was born, and telling him to let him be free, to not be upset at him for all his discretion because they were 'the same'. He asked that Ritsuka give him his whole self, and sacrifice his whole being for Seimei.
Ritsuka shocked him by refusing, telling him that while he still loved and forgave Seimei, and he would always believe in him, Seimei wasn't free to do whatever he liked, and hurting and betraying others was still very bad and he was angry at him for it. He scolded Seimei for hurting Soubi and said that he would never be Seimei's (or anyone's) possession, because he belonged to himself.
Chagrined, Seimei started to leave. Soubi stepped forward and berated Seimei, telling him not to hurt Ritsuka or make him afraid, that Ritsuka was indeed old enough to make these decisions. Seimei reminded Soubi that he was still Seimei's fighter (the name 'Beloved' still written on him), and forced Soubi to blow open the windows so he could make his escape.
Soubi was devastated at his own betrayal, but Ritsuka shrugged off what he did, since it wasn't his fault.
They had kept Nisei as a hostage, but while any harm that came to Nisei would come to Seimei, Ritsuka did not take any of his appeals for compassion seriously. The two soon found out that Kio had been kidnapped by their enemies, and they arranged to do a hostage exchange - Nisei for Kio - and ended up fighting 'Bloodless', a pair who used tactics of switching Fighter and Sacrifice, and gained control of their enemies by showing them painful illusions of their worst fears and memories.
Together, they won and retrieved Kio. Their future is now uncertain.
Canon Update: Ritsuka is growing and maturing, slowly adjusting to the idea that the Seimei he loved might truly be a bad person, and that he does not deserve to be abused by his own mother. He went to Comiket with Soubi, assisting one of Soubi's art school friends in selling her BL doujinshi.
Point in Canon: Loveless Chapter 81, after Soubi and Ritsuka have rescued Kio Loveless Chapter 89, before Ritsuka leaves school with Yuiko
Character Personality: "I decide who I believe in!"
Ritsuka is a very pure-hearted and sincere person. He hates dishonesty and people who mistreat others, and has no qualms about saying so. In fact, for the most part, he has absolutely no trouble at all speaking his mind, sometimes to the detriment of his relationship with others, though he can become politely cheerful and subservient concerning adults when it suits his purposes. He understandably wrestles with some adolescent angst - particularly the loss of his brother, Seimei, and now the fact that Seimei has betrayed him, and Soubi participated in that lie. He is not a particularly loving person, made uncomfortable by any declarations or physical shows of affection - the only exceptions to this are his brother Seimei, whom he adores and forgives even for the most awful things, and his mother, Misaki, whom he allows to abuse him and is afraid to abandon. He is usually startlingly mature in his decisions, though some might consider him to be abrupt and blunt in his wordings. In short, he is generally a rather serious young man, though he does have his occasional moments of dorkiness. He handles everything with a relatively cool head, even when the circumstances are extremely emotional and upsetting. He is able to endure pain, both psychological and physical, and is in many ways a calmer and more collected individual than the adults around him.
Conditional: Personality development in previous game: n/a
Character Plans: I'm apping in with a Soubi, so I'll definitely look forward to developing their dynamic in a place where Soubi would literally have to take care of him, and possibly playing out some word-battle circumstances. There are several other younger characters, and I'm looking forward to developing Ritsuka's relationship with them and sending him to school or something like that. There's also the fact that Ritsuka is a catboy, which also already exist in Siren's Port, and I think that could lead to some interesting plot circumstances. Also, Ritsuka will have to adjust to a world where you can't tell who's an adult just by looking at them.

[ A boy's voice broadcasts to the NV. He sounds rather lost and adolescent. ]
Soubi, where are you? You didn't answer my text.
...You said you'd always answer. After all this, you'd.... [ He trails off, murmuring. ]
Is this some kind of spell? Feels real. Not like an illusion.
[ He huffs a little, obviously annoyed. There's a swishing noise, like a large animal twitching its tail in frustration. ]
Soubi, where are you?

Ritsuka stared at the ceiling of his dormitory bedroom. The paint was peeling, and there was a faint smell of mold in the air. There were cracks in the ceiling crawling toward the light fixture. Upstairs, someone was was crying softly. That part wasn't so different from home. But it wasn't similar enough to seem familiar. Even if he closed his eyes, he couldn't make himself imagine that those sobs were his mother's. He didn't really want to, though.
Canada. He'd never left Japan, not even for a short school trip, and come to think of it, his English wasn't even that good. Apparently all he'd ever really needed to do was get sucked into some strange city, and bye-bye studying for English. Yuiko would be so jealous.
Ritsuka pressed his hand to his forehead, shading himself from the faint light of the window. Yuiko was back home. So were all the others. Even Soubi. Even Seimei.
It worried him a little bit, the idea that Soubi was stuck back home with Seimei around. Soubi could be so pathetic sometimes, and really prone to depression. What would he do without Ritsuka around?
He turned over to his side, curling his tail around his thighs and hugging himself tightly. The rain was still falling steadily. He didn't really want to get up, but slowly, he pulled back the covers. Hissed out a breath of protest as the cold air rushed in.
Soubi would be completely pathetic without him. He, on the other hand, was just fine.
Ritsuka sat up, stretching, and reached for his phone. He checked for text messages he knew wouldn't be there.
Just fine. He had woken up plenty of mornings alone in bed. This was no different.
Ritsuka checked his messages again. No luck, but there were more people chatting around on network again. He set the phone down, and stood up, giving a great yawn. His stomach gave a loud growl, and he frowned. He hoped there were still some onigiri left in the fridge.
