I've been fangirling Kate Beaton from afar for a little while now. I think its actually a requirement for all Canadian history dorks to be fans of her, but that's neither here nor there.

(If you don't know who she is, go check out her website. Read her webcomic. You don’t even have to be Canadian to appreciate her stuff either. If you've got a ( Read more... )

Thank-you for introducing me to a new addiction. I'm not even Canadian and it still amuses the hell out of me. Come to think of it, I'm not much of a fan of history after the ancients, either, and I'm tempted to look up a lot of the people mentioned. I'm not sure if I should be pleased about broadening my horizons or if I should be depressed that it took a comic to interest me in all these people and events. Hm.

Always happy to enable new addictions, especially when they're as awesome as this webcomic.

Have you been reading the little notes beneath most of her comics? Especially towards the beginning, she actually shares awesome tidbits. Though I'm betting you noticed that right away.

Speaking in my capacity as a history teacher, I'd say be pleased. Anything that sparks that interest in and curiosity about those people and those events is a GOOD THING. Plus, it is an awesome comic. Let's not forget this important fact. :)

No argument here.

Yeah, the notes are a large part of what drew my interest. I know/knew a few of the names, but other than their general occupation (explorer, regent, scientist, politician, et al.) I'm at a loss.

The cultural notes were probably the most interesting to me, relating the specific personages to their time periods and little tidbits about their personalities. After reading one of the comics about the Bronte sisters, I have decided I really need to read them. Especially Anne. It's pretty shameful that I have never read anything by any of them. I keep meaning to, but I've yet to do so. I've never read Austen, any of the Bronte sisters, or anyone from that span of time who wrote actual novels instead of plays. Any rec's there?

Keep that curisosity! Harness it, follow it wherever it may lead, and enjoy it. Seriously, you may think you regret time spent doing that sort of thing, but really? You won't. [/dork ( ... )
