does your free tattoo expire? can't you have your friend push back your appointment, or wait to make one until after something inspires you?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just think it ought to be something really personal for you. or give it over to him as an artist, if you want a surprise. if he does his own tattoo artwork, see if your literary influences inspire him at all, and let him put together something original for you. you could start a collection =)

I can't think of any great images (maybe the Globe theater?), but if you wanted text you could get "thou art thy mother's glass" as a tribute to your mom. If you like your mom. :)

Nabokov is known for his butterflies... but those have become rather cliche as tattoo subjects. Maybe small butterflies around a small quote from him?

that's great that you have a free tattoo appointment but perhaps you should wait to get a tattoo when you feel touched or inspired by something. not a tattoo just for the sake of a tattoo.
