She didn't understand the game.
She wasn't stupid, she wasn't one of those people that giggled and simpered about not knowing sports... She actually knew sports. She understood hockey, knew every stroke in the world when it came to swimming, and she could guess the judge's rating while watching a diving competition within tenths of a point.
Basketball, however, she just didn't get.
"That's traveling, isn't it?" Lita asked, pointing to the screen, and he shrugged.
"Not if you don't get caught."
"The referee was looking right at him. He took more than two steps without dribbling the ball. That's supposed to be traveling, right?" Lita asked, her eyes wide and innocent as she looked over at him... Snagging some of his popcorn as she spoke. He'd really have to be more careful about letting her get too close to his snacks. Or he'd have to learn to share. She popped a piece of popcorn in her mouth. "Isn't it?"
"Well, technically-"
"Technically, it was traveling, but because he's Mr. Bigshot I make a million dollars a game, it isn't."
"He don't make a million bucks a game," John corrected her, and she rolled her eyes.
"He just came back from an injury, and you said that he's supposed to need surgery. He'll probably end up playing just enough games this season to average out to a million a game," she tossed back, and he couldn't really argue with her logic. And in truth, she was right about the traveling thing, too. Sighing, John reached out, wrapping his arm around his girlfriend's shoulders, bringing her up against him as they settled back against the couch, the man frowning a bit.
"Remind me not to try and teach you new sports again. You learn too fast," he said, munching on some popcorn as the game continued on the screen. "Why are we watching basketball again?"
"Because you refused to watch the dog show," she said patiently, and he nodded.
"Oh, yeah. Basketball it is."
