I think Mal is struggling with this more than Jayne. For Jayne, life is simple. This feels good, so he'll do it. Mal is going to take a little more effort.

This is sort of sideways to your excerpt, but I was always fascinated by the tension between the supposed high status of Companions, and the attitudes towards ordinary whores in Firefly society, and Mal (thinky) and Jayne (so totally not) are sort of encapsulating it in the background of their interactions here. Also, hot. :-)
