Need geek help!

Theresa's portable hdd (which contains ALL of her photos) has quit.  It's a 120GIG SATA hdd that's being run via USB.  The fan turns on, but the drive won't be recognized by winblows XP or Vista.  What can we do about it?

this may or may not help, but if you have a friend who has a mac, try to mount it there. if that fails, run disk utility app.

lots of possibles-- if the HD has actually failed, there's data recovery services available. Most likely there will be data they can get off of it.

best case scenario: there's some weird corruption, and you'll be able to run a utility to clean it up.

then, of course (and you don't need me saying this): backup everything.

1. Install it into a system to rule out it not being the enclosure that's died. 2. If it still doesn't work, pick up spinrite at www.grc.com. 99% chance that spinrite will fix it. It's amazing.
