The crocheted thing is neat. The nice part about crochet is you can actually work around the bottles, and get a very tight fit.
The tomatoes in milk cartons could definitely be tied up in a much more aesthetic fashion.
I have instructions (thanks to my mom) on a self-watering planter out of two 5-gallon buckets. Which are often opaque white, grey, or orange. It does require a drill and a saw. I can bring that on my next visit.
I think I can fake something close enough with knitting and a little fidgety fussing using a really elastic stitch pattern for the bottom (like this, that pattern I'm using for the trellis, only flat).
I've got instructions for the big self-watering planters already, mais merci.
My mom actually did use macrame plant hangers just like that when I was a kid. They were neat. I used to get yelled at for spinning the plants, though. :)
I grew up doing macramé; there's still four or five plant hangers in my mother's house.
I like the idea of using it - and potentially knitting/crochet - to jazz up the reused containers we're using for overflow gardening (in large part because, knowing we're going to move in a year, we don't want to buy a lot of pots we'd then have to move).
Also, if I knit a sling for the self-watering soda-bottle pots, they can hang off the wall, and thus take up less of the narrow patch of ground-sunlight (it's sort of tricky; I have a wire shelf up already to sort of tier things, maximizing the number of plants I can get in a maybe 2 1/2' deep by 5' wide (varies through the day) patch of direct sun).
*rubs hands together.* And next year... I will try the macramé upside-down-tomato-gallon-milk-jug-planter. Or just steal my tospy-turvy back from my mom. ;-)
The topsy-turvy is so freaking cool! Too bad putting a plant in a pot is certain death for any plant in my care... :)

Luck with the knitting. I've found it is sometimes heard to try things on when knitting.... but then I'm not as skilled at it.
