Wot I did on my Labor Day weekend (plus miscellany)

Sep 04, 2013 11:06

Work gave us a half-day on Friday, and Monday off, so I had an extended weekend.

I'd like to say I spent it productively. I spent it relaxingly, at the very least ( Read more... )

I'd love to go to the aquarium with you sometime!

Yayay! I'll see if I can put together time(s). Unfortunately if we want to make use of my free tickets we'll have to go in small groups.

You're not the only one who can get free tickets! Advantage of working at a school.

We missed you. It turned into a crokinole tournament instead of bocce.

Mur tends to show up everywhere. Good for her!

I'm going to pull your arm. To go a little south to the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium instead. If you like the NEA you'll like the MMA. And it's one of the first places I worked, so I'm biased. But it has the advantage of not, you know, being IN BOSTON.

I'm really sorry I couldn't make it. I felt guilty, since I RSVPed yes. I guess it's better than the alternative...

I love aquariums in general, and would love to go to the MMA sometime.

Don't feel too bad, really! We still had lots of people, and putting it all inside made things more crowded than they would have been outside. And there weren't that many leftovers either. I really meant only that we would have enjoyed seeing you, not that you should have any negative emotions over it.

The second book in Crown and Court is SO much better. Mel is much less intolerably ... something.

I didn't know Mur was a VP alum until she congratulated me after I tweeted about getting in :)

Oh, man. I didn't realize Lace and Steel is also the same weekend as King's Musketeers, though I should have because for a brief time I was debating about playing KM a second time.

Also, I completely support a murder mystery with warring families in a fantasy setting. ^_^ It wouldn't be possible to write one worse than the one we played last year, so you have a lot of leeway. No matter how little effort you put in, people will say "wow, this was so much better than last year!"

Oh! What's the quality of the velvet? Did it come in other colors? I have a project that may include velvet coming up.

Huzzah for low standards!

The velvet is nice, high quality velvet--the type you'd buy for like $20/yard at Joann's. However, it has been stored improperly, and is crushed and wrinkled. I think I can revive it, though.

There didn't seem to be any other velvet there, but it's a thrift store, so there's a lot of turnover. I always check when I'm there, and I've found some really nice pieces in the past. Now, I just need to use some of them ;)

13-year-old me loved Crown/Court Duel. Now I kinda want to reread it.

I find myself vaguely tempted by Lace and Steel, because I haven't played a weekend-long in 5 years, but it's... *waves arms* all the way over there. Do there tend to be Boston contingents heading up that way for these sorts of things?

It's available cheap for Kindle! That's how I'm reading it. There's also apparently a prequel about Vidanric, called A Stranger to Command. I must admit, so far he's more interesting than Meliara, so I'm kind of wishing I'd started with that.

... also apparently the first time these books came out, they were portal fantasy involving a girl named Wren? But she rewrote them to be more standard fantasy, in their own world? I dunno, this is just what I read on her author page. The edition I'm reading dates back to 2002, so you may be familiar with the original version.

As for Lace and Steel: oh, sure, there are always people heading out. I know Mel, Will, and Alison, for example, are going. I'm trying to talk Chrisco into going, too.
