Okay, so based on your interests, I'd recommend in order...

Girlyman, Catie Curtis, Cordelia's Dad, Broadside Electric, and just because he is nifty, Richard Shindell.

Let me know if you want specific album recommendations.

I second almost all of these. Richard Shindell is an amazing storyteller (he was in Cry, Cry, Cry with Dar).

Sounds like folk-rock hits your spot somewhat. Three of those four could be lumped in there. But a little more rock than folk.

The Weepies, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer (more on the folky side of your folk rock divide), Lori McKenna (Bittertown is my favorite). It's sort of outside the genre you seem to be leaning towards, but Janelle Monae has this crazy concept/storytelling/robot thing going on.

All good suggestions, especially The Weepies.

If you like folk rock - almost anything containing Richard Thompson.

I actually saw Laura Marling last night. Her performance was glorious, and I need to work out what the more spoken bits remind me of. However, I sort of agree with the critics - there is far too much on the new album that is too concepted and sounds the same. Her earlier stuff is much fresher in terms of acoustic/folk.

That Tuscany thing reminds me of my school trip to Italy. I looked out the window of the bus and said, "Firenze? I thought we were going to Florence."

...I also once said "Well, according to that sign, we're at Sortie Station," while on the Metro in Paris.

I had that exact experience, in the other direction. In my native language, the city is called Firenze, same as in Italian. So when I moved to the Anglosphere and learned in school that the Italian Renaissance started from the city of Florence, it took me a while to figure out which city it was exactly.

Oh, and when I first read about the Third Reich, I thought that Goebbels' wife's first name was Frau.
