If you don't have it already, Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades has been recommended to me by a number of people, and I finally got around to buying a copy this week. It's written by the guy who founded Territorial Seed, and it's got a lot of (hopefully) useful information about the peculiarities of our local soil, sub-regional adjustments to planning dates, and all kinds of really neat stuff that makes me wish I had more room for traditional gardening.
Oh, and my mom has been fairly successful in saving her strawberries from foraging critters by creating a tent out of bird netting and metal stakes.
