Fashion Sense v. Common Sense on the Campaign Trail

I wrote about Palin's excursion into Marie Antoinette's closet yesterday here.

But other candidates have also gone all-too-elite in some of their fashion choices, per Newsweek:

If Palin's $2,500 Valentino jacket seems expensive, consider that Barack Obama wears Hart Schaffner Marx suits that retail for about $1,500. John McCain consistently wears ( Read more... )

I don't care so much if a candidate buys a $1500 suit or $520 shoes for him/herself, but (a) they shouldn't use campaign donations to pay for $150,000 worth of clothes; and (b) they shouldn't pretend to be more in touch with "Wal-Mart shoppers" than their opponent is (unless their opponent is buying even more expensive suits!). Note that $150,000 would buy 100 suits for Obama, word is he has 5, all paid for himself. Just for a point of comparison

Yeah, plus I mean a whole man's suit shouldn't be a thousand bucks cheaper than a woman's jacket. One -- the man's suit -- is pretty expensive but a good investment. The jacket -- and I've never seen her wear an outfit twice -- is just extravagant.

Of course, if you have a show dog, you spend a lot of money on grooming and handlers and training it to walk -- not so much on anything else. Working dogs have to learn to DO stuff.

$1500 is not all that much for a good man's suit, and Barack made sure that it was ALL-AMERICAN made.

Besides, $1500 for a good men's suit is not all that exorbitant; an off-the-rack suit at Macy's can easily be $800. And at least he's not expensing his clothing, his family's clothing, and trips for the kids!
