Independence from whom? I'm not sure what the date was when the legions withdrew and left us at the mecry of the "barbarians" anyway.

And I suspect I'm probably descended from the barbarians. :-D

Don't feel too bad. "Barbarian" was just another word for "not Roman enough." :)

To be precise 'Barbarian' was a Greek word, barbaroi (meaning to mumble unintelligibly) for those who didn't speak Greek (and the definition included the Romans :o)

Last time we got conquered here was by William the Bastard in 1066 so I don't think that counts :o)
