A Week of Single Parenthood

Sep 19, 2012 12:06

I've spent the last week being a single parent, and as usual, I emerge with all the more respect and awe for anyone that has to do this on a regular basis. Plus a healthy dose of thankfulness that I can choose to do this or not, sometimes.

There were also a few things that happened along the way...

Like accidentally abandoning Jet, cutting a finger on one of my chef's knives, and having to deal with a recalcitrant waterheater. But it all turns out to the good. )

thankful, jet, school, adventure

I have been the mom who gave a kid a ride home -- it was a band concert last year, and her dad thought she went home with her mom, and her mom thought she went home with her dad, and they were both in their cars so neither one could answer the phone... So the kid and I piled her and her instrument into our car (and got a call from her mom as we were about to pull out of the parking lot, wherein I assured her that no, no problem, I had the address loaded up on my phone's GoogleMaps) and took her home. (It was pretty close to ours anyway, really.)

These things, they happen. O:>

Yay for waterheater, eep for cuts (and whew that it wasn't worse), and yay for the return of Co-Parent! O:D

Yikes! Isn't it funny how we get set in our roles? When my SO travels, everything goes KER-FLOOEEY around here, but mostly in small ways (eating regularly, going to bed at a decent hour, and handling those weird little emergencies the local community has & nobody realized they were dependent on him).

Although last time I took a long trip, our water heater gave up the ghost completely (leaked everywhere) and he had to replace it, so maybe Fate Just Knows when there's only one of us around.

I think Fate does!! It's amazing, really....

Yeah, it does all go KER-FLOOEEEY.... *laughs*

I never seem to be able to get to sleep at a reasonable hour when he's not here, not that I do that well when he is, but I do *better*. *laughs*

Amusing side-note - I switched tabs & noticed that the tab with my LJ page was up with my little pirate guy & next to it was your LJ page with your little ninja guy. Pirates & Ninjas, OH MY!

I didn't know Jet played trombone! That's so cool!

It does make walking home harder, though. I forgot the bungee cords that Josh uses to strap his baritone to his cart, so he really struggled walking home with his instrument today after school.

Kate used to get her friends to help her by pulling her backpack when she had to carry her trombone home from school.

He loves the trombone, and John played it, too, so he has someone that knows what they're doing when they're directing him, so that helps immensely.

It does definitely make both walking and bike riding harder. *laughs* Poor Josh... Cool that both Josh and Kate play as well!! And I love the idea of a wagon for walking... that would help immensely, and we have one already with a handle, tires and everything!!

Thanks for the idea!!

Kate managed without a cart, but she did have her friends to help. Josh has a collapsible hand truck that he stands the baritone case on, then straps it to the back of the truck with bungee cords. He can tow that and his wheeled backpack behind him and walk to and from school. Last year he was smaller and had trouble managing the two things (they would run into each other or the baritone would have trouble going up and down curbs) so we had to help him get it to and from school, but he's grown a lot so he can manage it himself now.

It did make a huge difference. Six kids started on the baritone at the beginning of the year, and he's the only one who returned on the baritone this year. Struggling to get your instrument back and forth makes it a lot harder.
