So happy to hear your trip went well. John's family sounds pretty incredible and Jet! What a great kid you have there, mom. You done good. *grins*
Fresh seafood in Seattle. Sorry, but when you mentioned that, the brain took off and I started drooling. A looong time ago when we were in Japan, we went to the beach where Mama-san, my aunt and cousins went scrounging for uni at the beach. I remember there was a rocky cove and we found quite a few. My aunt and mother would carefully scoop them up, crack them and munch.
Like Jet, I found I didn't much care for them, either. ^^
Have you every gone to Domo in Denver? They have Tojimono there. Not quite chawanmushi but a close cousin :)
Two friends came to visit me last year and we spent the week in Denver playing tourist. Only one day did we go to Nan Desukan and the rest of the week we saw the Denver Museum of Natural History, tromped around the Bontanical Gardens and several other places. Before we all met up I had stumbled upon Domo restaurant so we had to go.
The owner is from the country and also customized the foods so it wasn't the traditional Japanese food that I'm used to (I'm from Yokosuka, it's a little south of Tokyo), but it was very delicious and there was *so* much food! The location is in the middle of an industrial looking area with a train track nearby. The outside of the place looked rather dreary in concrete blocks, but once you go through the shabby wooden gates, it feels like you stepped into a scenic garden in Japan. ^^
What a wonderful family you have, and what a lovely, fitting memorial sendoff for a life well-lived. I wish more people had memorial services like that, rather than the grim, somber, generic ordeals that most funerals end up being. I'm so glad for you and everyone in your family that it went so well, and for you and Jet and John that you had such a full, rewarding weekend, full of even more memories to add to your storehouse of ones about George's life and passing. And how fitting that his service be in the midst of blooming things, rebirth all around us! *hugs*
I'm so glad this went so well! Thank you for sharing it. Your story gave me longing for Seattle-- I heart Sushi and The Crumpet Shop are two of my favorite places, but I'm picturing the walk along Lake Union and (since I usually see it in the early evening), the glinting sun as it sets behind the hill.

(And enjoying yourselves buying spices and foods also seems an excellent way to celebrate life, too.)
