The AME church has roots in the Methodist church, which in turn came out of the Anglican tradition; so there is a family connection between AME and Episcopalians, but it's a relatively distant one. According to the AME site, they use the "Episcopal" mostly to refer to the fact that they're governed by bishops.

Culturally, as you saw, it's a very different experience from the typical Episcopal church.

There were a couple of AME students in my homiletics class, and believe me, they could light the room on fire when they wanted to :)
