I'm so glad you posted this essay. Hopefully fandom will eventually lose its OFC-phobia. It's gotten to the point where any female character who is competent, smart, canon or fanon, gets dismissed as a Mary Sue (and no, they really aren't, no really).

The stories are only as good as their execution. You can have a fic with only canon characters, and a story mixing an OFC with the canon characters, and the quality depends on how each story was written.

One of the current tragedies of fandom is that so many female characters are dismissed as Mary Sues. Though I do think the tide is slowly turning. It might be wishful thinking on my part but, ummm, I want to believe?

And, no, I really couldn't resist throwing in a gratuitous XF reference. ;-)

Word word wordy mcword. I've read stories from genres that I'd previously mocked solely because of execution. When it comes right down to it, storytelling is really all that matters.
