The End. Almost. Sort of.

Jan 19, 2011 20:02

I think it's reaching time for ths journal to come to an end. Quite aside from LiveJournal's own decay in terms of everything but advertising, it's now my primary source of spam from the comment system. So I'm probably going to have ljgrabber lock all the doors and maybe one day I'll actually host something under my control that isn't full of ( Read more... )

Really? I'm coming to the realisation that my view of LJ is biased because I have a paid (well, permanent) account; I don't see the adverts, and I get precious little in the way of spam from comments (unless you're referring to the notification emails, which can be turned off).

Ah well. I'm here for the duration. If you're set on leaving then so be it, but I'll be sorry to see you go.

There are full-page intersitals for people not logged in, and a lot of "social" stuff like sharethis is incredibly annoying if you don't NoScript it to death.

I dont get spam either, altho several flist people have complained. Possibly cull your friends, make it no anonymous posts?
I also use gmail as my notifying mail, which collects spam pretty efficiently - cant say I ever seen LJ spam in it tho.

Please dont stop, there are few enough posting now as it is. Dont let FB win :)

oh um well done :) There Is Life After a Fud. It takes a while, but it does come back :) Hope yours is more use to you than mine has been.

The set of people I want in Friends, and set of people who should be able to post, are unfortunately not the same. Unfortunately, the spammers have (random) LiveJournal accounts, and while my default-screened policy keeps them from poisoning Google, it still ends up hitting my filters and ending up whitelisted into my comments folder.

Also I was kind of irked when I went to the LiveJournal mass-security tool linked under journal management to lock everything the official way only to be told to upgrade to a paid account. There's creep to making everything that way and if I'm going to pay to host a blog I may as well just go for a damn VM.

And, hahaha, I've been refusing to have anything to do with Facebook for over three years, and that hasn't changed.

Seconding the congrats, and the request for a forwarding address type thingy. :)

PS: I don't see any spam either, but I already have a stupid permanent account.

Do you get the option to ban a user and report them as a spammer when deleting one of their posts?

Because I noticed those checkboxes vanishing recently here in free-land.

I don't know. I've never deleted someone's posts from my journal. Not even spammers, I don't think. (I think maybe I have had about a half dozen spam comments in the last decade here. I've actually had more spam-type 'friends' add me than spam comments.)
Were the two options sequentially displayed, or were they simultaneous?

I'll have to go find an older post with comments I can delete. (It feels odd doing this to a friend's comment.)
ETA: Update: I get options to delete comment, ban user, report as spam, or delete all comments by that user in that thread.

Right. This might actually be JavaScript related.

Previously, I'm sure the non-JS page for it listed all of those, but that stopped (right now it's only report-as-spam). I just let NoScript temporarily allow LJ, and now I see them in the horrible dynamic drop-down thing.

Regardless, I'm still getting a steady flow of spammers commenting on old entries.

Thirding the congrats, and what BB2 said.

I don't see interstitials, but maybe I'm just lucky. Either that or they don't run them in Germany. I did get some LJ messages spam a while back, but that seems to have stopped for now.

Also, good on you for continuing to refuse the Facebooks. It's getting to the point where their lack-of-privacy policy is giving me the creeps, and this is coming from someone who wouldn't mind wearing an active webcam-linked HUD for 80% of his waking hours.

Anyway, could you link to your doctoral thesis somewhere? Would be quite interested to see it.

Congratulations on the doctorate.

It'll be a shame to see you go. I'm not sure what bothers you that much as Adblock+ basically turns off all advertisements, and since I mostly view only my friends page, I don't see anything too annoying. I just have a basic account, though. There is spam from time to time, but that hasn't happened in weeks.

I'm less than pleased that other people looking at my posts have to sit through all that crap.
