There's no reason for Gene not to dive right back into work, now that he's back from wherever he was... Or maybe wherever he wasn't. He's not exactly sure just what happened to him back there, only that it pisses him off

Sam's been waiting for him to knock - it's not as if he couldn't hear him pacing outside. When the knock does come, Ivanhoe jumps a little, probably preparing to bolt for cover underneath the bed. Sam, on the other hand, gets to his feet, walks calmly to the door, and pulls it open, eyebrows raised already.

"Ten minutes," he says simply. "I've been timing you."

Gene is, at the moment, looking at anything but Sam. "Right. Just wanted to see nothing happened. And seeing as how nothing has, that's about it, then."

He should go. He has work to do.

"If something had happened, I would have said so on the journals," Sam comments dryly, one hand on the door frame, searching Gene's face as much as he can when he won't look at him. "I'm fine."

After a moment, he shifts a little to allow Gene to step through the door if he'd like. "Where were you, then? Gondor? Cair Paravel? I've heard children's books are standard."

"No you wouldn't," Gene says, stepping into the doorway, not entering the room, but standing inches away from Sam himself. "Not if it just happened to you, because you don't need to tell anyone anything, do you, Dorothy?" That came out angrier than he intended, but he can't be arsed to take it back.

"And I was nowhere, for the record. Bloody nowhere, just two months out of my life gone when all I wanted was a curry, which I never got, and now this entire city's gone to hell and they're killing little girls."
