Books Read/Movies Seen in 2009

I am starting a list of books I read and movies I see this year. I've already seen a few movies, but I've been pretty bad in the book-reading department as of late.

Any recommendations?

Books Read in 2009:

1. Loving Frank by Nancy Horan
2. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
3. The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
4. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled ( Read more... )

I loved ...And Ladies of the Club by Helen Hooven Santmyer which I read last year. I rarely cry over something I read, but I ended up crying a couple of times while reading Santmyer's novel. It's a huge though, over a 1,000 pages. Still, if you have the time and patience, it's a wonderful book.

I also loved Atonement by Ian McEwan but if you've already seen the movie, then I'm not sure it will hold the same punch. Interestingly, I've noticed that people who liked the movie had previously read the book and that people who disliked the movie hadn't read the book. I just rented the film, so I'm looking forward to it.

On a lighter note, I recently just finished a book of essays by Laurie Notaro called The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club that I found amusing. I also really liked Loved Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. Definitely chick lit, but a really sweet story. Both are really quick reads, around 250 pages ( ... )

Awesome, thanks! These sounds like some good, girly books. I'll check them out!

I loved The Book Thief. It's classified as young adult, but it's brilliant enough to not matter. It's a WWII/Holocaust story that is very tender. I would also suggest Augusten Burrough's latest A Wolf at the Table if you haven't read it yet. It goes even deeper than Running With Scissors.

Whit is reading The Book Thief right now and says it's great! I'll have to check it out. The only Augusten Burroughs I've read is Dry, which I really liked, so I need to read his other stuff.

Thanks for the recs!

Have you read The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns?

I tried to read The Kite Runner a few months ago and lost interest a few pages in, but everyone says it's really good, so I guess I should give it another shot!

And the other book you mentioned is by the same author, right?

Oh please give it another chance. It's a BEAUTIFUL story that made me cry (and it takes a lot for a book to make me tear up).

And yes, A Thousand Splendid Suns is by the same author.

The Kite Runner is told from a male perspective, and A Thousand Splendid Suns is told from a woman's perspective. They're both stories having to do with life, love, family, war, etc. in Afghanistan. I just love both books, so I hope you do too!

I've recently read Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List and Are We There Yet? both written by David Levithan who is a wonderful teen fiction writer. You should also check out I Was Told There'd be Cake by Sloane Crosley. It's a hilarious and fabulous collection of essays. The author came to my university last semeser and read "The Ursula Cookie" from it. She's fantastic!
