In very general, visible terms, and I'm talking about what you notice when you're fast forwarding through one, disaster movies consist of five elements, in descending order of interest

I may need to start to put together movie nights with heckleworthy films. Maybe not SyFy original movies though, I don't want to scare people off. :)

I wonder just how much TVTropes has fleshed out the disaster movie genre.

TV Tropes is a very easy place to fall into a hole and crawl out several hours later. It can be pretty insightful when it comes to story elements.

What this one had was Lance Henricksen as a military officer leading a secret project to send a group of people into a deep underground bunker to protect them from the supernova, somehow. He was apparently a bad guy because he was only working to save a small group of people and not everybody.

You forgot: the oddball protagonist who warns of the coming danger, is ignored, then is vindicated when the disaster occurs and his primary naysayer is ironically killed.

Or the guy who snaps, turns quisling, and tries to sell everybody out to the supernova.
