I was just thinking of this the other day. The first piece of fanfiction I ever wrote, instead of just daydreaming up, was for Plato's The Symposium. Not that I was that huge a fan, but I had a teacher who was. It was an assignment. So the first fanfic I wrote was RPF.
The next piece of fanfiction I wrote was actually not really fanfiction at all. It was more along the lines of a parody; I saw a few amusing implications in a fantasy universe and extrapolated from there. But I did use my own characters, none of which were me or careful exercises in non-self-insertion. They were the people they needed to be to work with the implications that amused me.
And neither of those were betaed,so I managed to avoid starting off with that trauma. :-)
Speaking from the professional publishing point of view, that is NO way for an editor to behave, even a volunteer editor! I'm sorry you had that experience.
I've never written fanfic, so I can't answer that question. (I've always kept my fictional world-expanding imaginings in my mind. Don't know wether that's more selfish or generous! :D)
That was an asshole move in my opinion. No. You come from a place in kindness if you help someone. You don't do that.
And a confession: First fanfic was RPF New Kids on the Block self-insertion Mary-Sue stuff. I was a con artist who hooked up with Donnie. And I will be forever glad that the Internet didn't exist when I was a teenager.
