What's your favorite way/method/program to teach yourself a language? I'm excluding formal courses and immersion programs on basis of $$$$$$

language instruction, language acquisition, fun

Reading Harry Potter in the target language, books I already knew very well in my mother tongue helped A LOT.

I spent time in the States that really helped my English but keeping it up is done by reading literature, fanfiction and watching shows and movies.

Reading has helped me immensely. Reading fiction, reading news websites, reading academic articles. Starting small and translating a LOT of individual words, then improving from there. Doing it every day (e.g. making websites in my target language my internet homepages). Listening to podcasts where possible.

I'm still looking for good ways to improve my active language skills, because my German speaking and writing really could do with some work, ugh.
