The cases get much easier with time, though. It's been, oh, three or four years since I discovered the atrocity that is the Genitive case and about six months into it I had it down (I still hate it though!)
You are so lucky you have an opportunity to study Dutch! I honestly wish I had a chance to study Dutch, but my sigh school did not offer it college does not offer it, so I'm going to stick with German and add Italian to it. Maybe take Japanese or Mandarin, too.

There was actually a book written about the topic a couple of years ago: "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod". All I can say is.. if it's a matter of possession, ALWAYS use genitive. :)
