God kväll!

Hi! I'm Beth, super-bouncy and more than a little bit silly, and I have to confess that I'm crazy when it comes to languages. I have a list of, at the last count, thirteen (Swedish, Dutch, Italian, Irish Gaelic, Welsh, Greek, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic) on top of the three (English, French and German) which I ( Read more... )

english, english dialects, swedish, dutch, french, german, introductions, mandarin

I am right there with you on the German cases. I detest the Genitive case, but Nominative, Accusative, and Dative are lovely, but I also love the objective case in English, so maybe that's why I like accusative and dative so much.

The cases get much easier with time, though. It's been, oh, three or four years since I discovered the atrocity that is the Genitive case and about six months into it I had it down (I still hate it though!)

You are so lucky you have an opportunity to study Dutch! I honestly wish I had a chance to study Dutch, but my sigh school did not offer it college does not offer it, so I'm going to stick with German and add Italian to it. Maybe take Japanese or Mandarin, too.

Nice to meet you!

I honestly don't know. I am just very interested in lots of languages and I've always liked the way it sounded when I hear is spoken. That's a terrible reason, I know, but that is sort of why I got into German and I love it more than anything, now, even if the grammar is a terrible, terrible, thing.

That's the same reason why I like German and at least half of the reason why I'd like to learn Dutch, so don't feel guilty or anything. :P

Your German teacher is right though, and I'm glad to hear he disencourages the use of the dative in cases where the genitive is right. That said - the majority of Germans has no clue about the proper use of the genitive, and more and more people start using the dative when it's actually incorrect. So basically, if you get the genitive/dative confusion right, you will be considered a superb German speaker ;)
There was actually a book written about the topic a couple of years ago: "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod". All I can say is.. if it's a matter of possession, ALWAYS use genitive. :)

I totally agree. I'm a stickler for doing things 'right' myself and she (my teacher's a woman) always threatens to send us to the local sixth-form college (i.e., "where all the dossers go"!) if we're caught using the Dative instead of the Genitive :P
Oh wow, thanks for telling me about that. It sounds worth a read, even if only to clear up the matter of Genitive vs Dative!
