music-language question

Does anyone speak the epic win that is Polish?* :3 I'm not sure if this is allowed in the community but basically I'm looking for Polish music, but I haven't a clue where to start. I mean, YouTube is a good place to start but I don't want to go about it randomly. Also, I should explain that by Polish music I mean music in Polish, not just music ( Read more... )

I do and I'd be more than happy to recommend you some artists! :) Unfortunately, it's quite late already and I'm sleepy (and thus can't focus) so I'll comment again in the morning~

btw, it's really nice to see someone who likes Polish this much ♥

Native speaker here, hi! :) I suppose the quality of text and enunciation matters? I recommend Budka Suflera for good texts and music. Try their 'Jest taki samotny dom', here's with translation.
Lady Pank, try 'Mniej niż zero' or 'Zamki na piasku' or 'Mała wojna' or 'Zostawcie Titanica'...
Grzegorz Turnau. I love 'Naprawdę nie dzieje się nic'. 'Bracka' is also nice, and latest 'Bombonierka'...
Edyta Geppert (fine diction!) I always cry by 'Jaka róża taki cierń'. Be warned, but it can be just me. ;) 'Kocham cię, życie' is also fine.
Stan Borys and must-hear 'Jaskółka uwięziona'

Uh, OK, that's for now. Tell me, please, if this list is useful and how do you like these songs. Do you want more? :) There's no today mainstream hits, cause they're mostly not much worthy, in my humble opinion. That's mostly Rock '70-'80 and sung poetry, I don't know if you like it. How about good shanties? ;)

Ooooh I liked those, most particularly Grzegorz Turnau's "Naprawdę nie dzieje się nic". I didn't cry with "Jaka róża taki cierń" but the lyrics were lovely! I quite enjoyed them. :3

Haha, and by today mainstream hits, you mean singers like Gosia Andrzejewicz? When I clicked Budka Suflera's "Jest taki samotny dom" I was suggested one of her songs, called "Pozwól Żyć". I didn't think it was bad, just "okay" I guess, haha. I might check out some other stuff of hers, tho, maybe I just wasn't quite taken by this particular song.

Hooray, I'm glad you like it! :D More? ;) Remember that woman in the end of 'Jest taki samotny dom'? She sings also on her's own, search her by name Urszula. I like her 'Dmuchawce, latawce, wiatr' or 'Rysa na szkle'.

Uh, Gosia Andrzejewicz, yes... Something like this. XD Hmm, talking about the today mainstream, maybe let's try varied kinds? Wilki 'Bohema' or 'Na zawsze i na wieczność' or 'Atlantyda łez'... Kayah 'Na językach' or 'Testosteron'... Golec uOrkiestra 'Pędzą konie' or 'Ściernisko'... Brathanki 'Za wielkim morzem ty' or 'Czerwone korale'... A bit older Varius Manx 'Zamigotał świat' (love it!) or 'Ruchome piaski' or 'Moje Eldorado'... Edyta Bartosiewicz 'Zegar' or 'Skłamałam'... Edyta Górniak 'To nie ja' (2th place on Eurovision 1994) or 'Dotyk' or 'Jestem kobietą'... Piotr Rubik 'Niech mówią, że to nie jest miłość'...

OK, stop, stop! right? :D Waiting for opinions. ;)

Polish = also known as the Epic Sibilants language; it has /s z ʂ ʐ ɕ ʑ t͡s d͡z t͡ʂ d͡ʐ t͡ɕ d͡ʑ/.

I work with Ubykh, which has /z s ʣ ʦ ʦ’ ʑ ɕ ʥ ʨ ʨ’ ʑʷ ɕʷ ʥʷ ʨʷ ʨʷ’ ʒ ʃ ʤ ʧ ʧ’ ʒʷ ʃʷ ʐ ʂ ɖʐ ʈʂ ʈʂ’/. Sorry, but to me Polish is only a Mildly Intriguing Sibilants language. :D

I'm afraid I can't help on the Polish music, but if you have no Finnish stuff, although the vast majority of Nightwish's stuff was done in English they did do a couple of nice songs in Finnish, especially "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan". If you'd be interested in stuff a bit further afield, Makka Sagaipova and Khava Tashaeva both sing in Chechen and they have some quite good songs (and Chechen is amazing to listen to).

OH MY GOD I CAN'T. /dies SIBILANT OVERLOAD. So what do you do as far as working with Ubykh goes? Are you a historical linguist? (Phonetics/phonology and historical linguistics are my favourite branches) Are there any extant languages with similarly large consonant inventories? Seems like Ubykh is the king, but come on, Polish is still pretty high up in the sibilant scale as far as IE langs go. ;D Anyways, my interest in sibilants and such comes from having written (this year!) a paper on Old Spanish's sibilants and how they changed. :D

Anyways, yeah, I'm a Nightwish fan and have their 3 or so songs in Finnish, as well as a couple songs by Olavi Uusuvirta. Can't say I've ever heard music in Chechen but will check it out. :D

I know, right? :D Yep, there are other languages with similar-sized or even arguably bigger inventories, though the more complex the inventory gets, the more likely it is that different researchers will analyse it differently and so will come up with different counts of consonants. AFAIK Ubykh still has the largest consonant inventory that's more or less universally agreed upon (80 plus 4 consonants found only in loans, though one researcher claims there's one more native consonant), but even it isn't the sibilant king! The Bzhedugh dialect of Adyghe, a closely related language, has only 65 consonants, but 29 of them are sibilants: /z s ʣ ʦ ʦʰ ʦ’ ʑ ɕ ɕ’ ʑʷ ɕʷ ɕʷ’ ʥʷ ʨʷ ʨʷʰ ʒ ʃ ʃʰ ʤ ʧ ʧʰ ʧ’ ʐ ʂ ʂʰ ɖʐ ʈʂ ʈʂʰ ʈʂ’/. Now THAT'S sibilant overload. ;) But yes, Polish surely has to be the IE winner - though I notice it's tied with Belarusian, so it has to share the glory in that regard ( ... )

well-well-well, mentioning Belarussian and not mentioning Ukrainian?
weird. to say the least.

I don't know whether you're interested in classical music, but the first thing that came to mind for me was Górecki's Third Symphony. It has lyrics sung by a solo soprano in Polish in the first two movements. Some people love it and some hate it: I'm in the "love" camp. I believe it's one of the best-selling classical recordings ever made.

There seem to be a few recordings on YouTube: I don't know how good they are.

i only know a few songs in polish, but i can try to help out with the lack of other european music. as a general disclaimer: i am totally not caught up on the pop culture of any of these countries, most of these songs are at least a few years old, and i have absolutely no taste whatsoever. here goes:

french: superbus
german: die ärzte
hungarian: crystal
finnish: shade empire (it's metal, so i don't know how well you can hear the lyrics, if that's what you're after, but it's an awesome song anyway.)

those are just the languages you mentioned in your post, but if you'd like recommendations for music in any other european languages, i have at least one song for pretty much every single one, so feel free to ask. ♥ i have a whole lot for estonian, especially.

(most of what i listen to is korean music, so i've kind of fallen out of touch with european music. i hope this is at least somehow useful, though :> )

@Estonian: Send some recommendations my way pls! Estonian is, at least phonologically, full of win. :D

Actually, since you listen to tons of Korean, can you recommend me some stuff that *isn't* Lee Jung Hyun (b/c I already listen to her all day errrday) and isn't BoA / Girls Generation / Rain / SHINee / etc. (because I already know of them)? Any genre is fine; I just want to expand my tastes beyond the well-known artists, if possible. :3

haha, estonian here, glad to hear we are phonologically full of win :> i have so so so many recommendations for estonian, but i really tried not to shove an explosion of links at you. i didn't really succeed. OTL i am so sorry for the impending linkspam. ANYWAY, HERE GOES:

getter jaani & koit toome, vennaskond, urban symphony, henrik raave, metsatöll, terminaator, dagö, mari-leen, smilers, lenna kuurmaa & chalice, siiri sisak, propeller, tuberkuloited, genialistid, black velvet, and of course this song because it is hilarious and amazing.

for korean: most of what i listen to is the famous artists, especially the typical boybands, haha. but i'm going to go ahead and rec bella and x-5. x-5 just debut recently, but i don't think they're too well-known yet. and ... there's a good chance you've heard of them, but i want to rec dae guk nam ah because they are amazing amazing talented bbs and so adorable. (yes i am shamelessly biased. OTL ( ... )
