Oh that's interesting!
I'm from a Niederrheinisch dialect region, but I speak only a minimum. My grandparents used to speak Platt, so I understand a lot.

I think (I'm willing to be corrected here) that some Mennonites speak a variety of Low German (known as Plautdietsch)- they originated in the north-east of Germany. Other varieties of Low German are spoken in the north-west, and they have a lot in common with Dutch, and even a bit in common with English.
