English is probably your best option, but it wouldn't hurt to learn some Croatian phrases as well.

I speak very mediocre Russian, and from listening to songs in Croatian, I've found that I understand a fairly equal amount of Croatian. They've got plenty of differences, to be sure, but like you say, they are both Slavic languages, so they also do have a certain amount of similarities.

Thanks! I will have to check out some Croation music or something online too see if my Russian is still good enough to perhaps understand any of it.

Tip: in Dubrovnik, use English. In all other Croatian coastal towns, use German. Don't use Russian, Croatian indeed is quite far from it.
