Davidbowie, you were so cute. First hamster I ever saw in person and you were so chill. I will always remember your party nature and how much you like to sniff/wiggle your cute nose. I'm gonna pour something out for you tonight in your memory.
He really WAS chill! Most hamsters get feisty when you bug them, but he was more of an insatiably curious type. He could make a break for the space under the refrigerator, and someone would scoop him up and set him down, and he would go off running again, and the whole thing would repeat over and over... wouldn't give up, wouldn't get mad.

That sucks.
I remember when my brother's hamster died. It had on lived to 3, so Davidbowie is pretty longlived by my standards.
Are you getting a new one? Cuz otherwise I'd suggest a goldfish as an alternative: 1) Live longer 2) Lower maintenance (20% tank change one a month, feed once a day) 3) Way less smelly
Black moors and ryukins are the nicest looking, but there is a lot of variety.

Since we are up to three parrots at the moment, I don't think we are going to be getting any other pets to replace the Bowie-san (like any other pet could *ever* replace him). But we did stop to look at the fish at PetSmart when we were picking up bird food. Personally, I like the idea of having a terrarium with hermit crabs, and painting shells and putting them in for the crabs to use as houses.
