A Tide Taken at the Flood (Pike, PG-13) 3/3

Author's Note: When I first got the idea to write about Pike, I assumed that the nerve of an able-bodied person writing about disability could be mitigated by appeals to The Future or to canon. Unfortunately, other than the fact that he's in a wheelchair at Kirk's ceremony, the movie gave us nothing about Pike's condition. The movie script mentions ( Read more... )

Wow. This is so lovingly detailed, with such insights into Pike's and Jim's characters. It's obvious you've put a lot of thought into your story, and it certainly shows in how intelligent, well-written, and thought-provoking it is, with just the undercurrent of pain, bitterness, and at the end, hope.

Thanks so much! It did require some research--one of the fun/frustrating things about the movie is how much was left unsaid. I hope there will be another spate of fill-in fic after the DVD comes out.

This is probably one of the most beautiful gen fics I have ever read, and definitely my favorite 'in-between' stories detailing everyone's return to earth. Everything about this is perfect: Pike's voice, Kirk's mild attitude, the technical jargon, and oh, the imagery!

And when McCoy says, “Maybe that’s what happens when someone’s been trying to kill you since the day you were born." …I think that broke me just a little bit. So sad and wonderful, yet the whole thing was hopeful.

Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you.

What a kind comment! As you may see from my fic list, it's my first real gen story, and it felt more like writing a pro novel (like I really had to pay attention to canon!)

One of my favorite Kirk characteristics from the movie is how persistent he is, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that everyone's out to get him. It takes a real hero to do the right thing, even if it's not going to be appreciated.

You're very kind, and I love the icon! Why oh why couldn't Pike have been captain for just a little while longer...

This is wonderfully done. My favorite part was probably the scene where Pike tells Jim he's made captain, but I loved the whole thing, especially the little details about Pike dealing with the aftermath. I love that he has a dog, for instance. :-)

The quickest way to make a nice guy nicer is to give him a dog :) Breaking the news to Kirk is one of those (countless) great missing scenes you can imagine happening 100 different ways. Bureaucracies being what they are, there must have been a tremendous amount of back-room negotiating involved...
