Thanks so much! I find Spock terribly hard to write, but I figured, as in TOS, there's a special connection between Pike and Spock that may have something to do with the fact that he's the first really approving authority figure he's ever met.

You've actually made me believe that Kirk should be commanding the Enterprise with Spock's appraisal of him here. That's pretty impressive, since I was never hugely fond of Kirk. Also, I love all the stuff you show going on in Pike's head. Excellent.

Yes, I think it's necessarily a bit of a retcon since he really isn't qualified--even if he's a quick learner, there's tons of procedural and bureacratic stuff he wouldn't know how to do. He's going to have to be the "lead by example" type and delegate a lot, I think. However, if you're bacon's about to get scorched, he's probably the guy you want around.
