I am not sure I ever actually was TAUGHT most of this stuff, but we're so inundated with this crap as children that we pick it up. And nobody ever explicitly taught me that things like the cherry tree story were wrong.
We were taught an awful lot of bullshit about Columbus though. And (unsurprisingly) the Civil War.
