"It isn't that simple. As I've stated previously, one must consider the historical contex--"

"I done told you 'bout usin' them 50 credit words, crazy girl. Don't no one know what in the hell you're sayin'! Talk normal."

River sighed. "What I mean is that in Austen's time, a gentleman would not have propositioned a lady in such a way. Rather, he would court her and eventually ask for her hand in marriage if he felt she would make a suitable mate. Elizabeth is not a common street whore, Jayne."

Jayne scoffed and shook his head as if he'd never heard anything more bizarre. "Well, I think that is the problem, right there. These folks spend too much time flappin' their faces 'bout each other, and not enough time sexin'."

"Of course not, Jayne. They're British."

Can I just say, when I read this line, “It’s about interpersonal misunderstandings and hypocritical social constructs.” I thought to myself that it could be anything, but it really sounded like Jane Austen to me. Then I scroll down and see it was and I gave a little cheer, like this: *woo*

I like that Jayne and River are becoming friends through reading. It's just so delightfully geeky and sweet!

I don't usually read Jayne and River stories, even just friendship, because it seemed like such an odd idea. But I love the way you've got it going.

To be honest, it's how it is so odd that makes me curious about their relationship. Their interaction in canon is minimal and negative. It's not easy to believably get them into the same room together, you know? It's a fun challenge! ;)
