River was hiding from the monsters.

It had been a long journey between jobs, and they were traveling far out in the black. First there had been darkness, then the monsters came. They lurked now in the shadows, waiting. River felt their ravening jaws snap at the frayed hem of her mind and she recoiled. She had hidden herself well in one of the cargo bay’s nooks and knew that if only she could stay quiet long enough, the monsters would become tired and move on to fresh prey.

River snuggled up tight to Serenity, and listened.

She heard the shuffling of feet and faint whispers as the monsters spoke softly to one another. Minutes went by, there was more shuffling. Silence fell. Time passed.

Suddenly, there was light, and a voice.

“Gorramit girl, you win!”

“Frustrated, Jayne?”

“Damn it, Mal, it ain’t fair playin’ with her - she knows all the best spots and she can see us comin’, even in the dark.”

“Aw, now Jayne! Don’t be cranky just ‘cause you ain’t the best at hide go seek no more!”

At Kaylee’s words, River slowly removed herself from her hiding place in Serenity’s hull. She squeezed out from behind some crates to see the crew gathered in the middle of the bay, looking tired.

River tried for what she hoped was her most innocent, apologetic smile and looked at Jayne.

“She will try to choose a more obvious hiding place next time,” she beamed.
