Lost ficlet for
15minuteficlets. Challenge word/title is under the cut.
Pairing: None, really. Just Shannon/Boone sibling angst.
Rating: PG
Words: 197
Disclaimer: Blah, blah, same old story. Not mine.
Notes: First time I've ever done a 15 minute ficlet! I went a couple minutes over, but hopefully I will improve with time. I consider this practice for the dreaded NaNoWriMo! Thanks to
vegetariansushi for giving it the once over.
Challenge word for the week of October 10, 2004: "Oblivious."
Boone would have thought that growing up in the same house as another person and sharing everything with them during that time would amount to a dynamic, intimate knowledge of that individual’s nature.
He was wrong.
Boone knew better than anyone how selfish, insensitive, and unkind his sister was, but even he was shocked to discover how completely oblivious she could be.
As he observed her crouched form from a safe distance, he marveled at how she could placidly sit on the warm sand and paint her toenails even as the people around her screamed and sobbed, even as the fuselage burned low with rippling heat behind her. He could hear her humming some throwaway pop ballad as she detached her shining hair from her freshly glossed lips for the hundredth time.
Watching her made him feel sick to his stomach. He wanted to slap the bottle of enamel from her hand, shake her by the shoulders, kick sand all over her, do anything that might make her notice what was going on around her.
Instead, he took a deep breath and walked over to see if he might be able to bring her out of herself.
