I know the feeling. Well, NOT the feeling of saying I have an agent--still waiting for that one! :) The feeling of telling someone you're writing a book and then watching their face. If they're not a writer, they don't know what to say, and they don't know how to say it. And they don't get it--the whole process and how long it takes and how iffy it is and how little money there usually is at the end. You get a lot of--how's that book going? When will we see it on the shelves?
Here's the thing I think you/we need to remember. Even if we're in a different world than them, even if they don't really have a way IN to ask a question or make a comment, they ARE excited for you and that mom will be totally happy to help you out. Plus, she'll probably tell her friends all about it

Yeah, it is nice to tell someone good news. And I was thinking, she has two kids younger than my son and her oldest son,so maybe they'll still be in elementary school by the time I have a book published. I shouldn't be shy about soliciting my possible future readers!
Invisibility has its benefits but I wouldn't mind superpower strength and the ability to fly. Maybe I'll invent my own cape for my own special kind of insecurity.
I felt very shy about telling people I had an agent. I didn't even announce on the blue boards and those are people who would get it!
Nowadays when I meet friends at get-togethers (they always ask me how my book is coming) I mention that I have an agent. I try to treat it the same way somebody might talk about a new job or promotion. That is, I give enough importance to it to share, but I don't dwell on it either and usually the conversation moves on to other things.
Hey -- we're profesionals and this is part of what we do professionally. :)
You're right. I just think I'm a long way away from feeling professional when it comes to talking to people who don't know what I do. Who would think talking about your agent would be a tough one?
This is very exciting (meeting your new agent) -- have you revealed a name yet? (Did I miss it?)...not that you have to, btw :) I know some people prefer to keep that info under wraps.
I know what you mean -- probably most of us do! *When* I have an agent, I already know I'll feel silly coming out and saying it to the majority of my friends/acquaintances. I probably won't say anything at all. I never do now unless someone specifically asks...it's like I have a secret life/identity -- so yes, red cape all the way!
No, I had to go back to being mum about the agent. He didn't send the contract as he had said. I think when we agreed to meet in two weeks he just thought it would wait until then. Unless its something else. Unless I should be worried. Oh yeah, one insecurity crisis at a time. As soon as I sign the contract I'll give the details!
Yes, and I thought about it and decided I had better say literary agent in case she thought I was breaking into showbusiness. So that felt even less comfortable than just "agent".

Too bad you weren't a better liar and said something like "I have to meet my accountant" or something really boring but necessary sounding.
Maybe Harry Potter will lend you his Invisibility Cloak. One size fits all!

It's much better news than going to a doctor!
