Turning idealistic characters gray

Jul 04, 2007 16:49

Before I start, I just want to make it clear that, in this case, I’m not lumping all characters who have strong beliefs into the idealistic set. This rant deals, instead, with protagonists or secondaries who have both strong ideals and a lack of information about how they apply to the pragmatic world, or about their consequences.

So this rant is about moving them towards seeing those applications, or those consequences )

Very nice rant. :)

Sorry I can't be more specific than that, but the heat hath fried my brain.

The next rant will be on fantasy-and-science-fiction hybrids

Ooooh really looking forward to this one.

I like what you wrote about so many people assuming a character is straight and white until proven otherwise. There do need to be more stories about that, and if the "identity" is not the main focus of the story, so fucking what? It doesn't need to be. There are plenty of coming out stories already for those who want them.

More reason for me to appreciate Deus Ex, which isn't even in a medium amenable to great stories (first-person shooters).

I feel bad, tho, for not noticing the R in "gray" right away.
