Suggestion post

I've been trying to come up with new ideas for rants so I could do a poll, but unfortunately my brain seems to run best on prompts at the moment. If you'd like to see a particular rant, go ahead and suggest it here, and it'll probably make it into the poll. (Feel free to second/third/etc. someone else's idea that you like ( Read more... )

measurement units rant ? khajidu April 16 2007, 13:13:43 UTC
Why not a rant on measurement units, like length, mass, or time ?

Or the occasional difficulty in believing what happened in a stated period. Some writers have things work too fast, others too slow.

I second this one. Sometimes, it seems like to make things work, too many things have to happen in such a short period of time, and the author can't really make it work.

I second this one, particularly because I've been watching a lot of Avatar, and like all nick shows (no matter how this one watches like a good fantasy novel), it has all its action for each episode taking place in one day. And I just can't get down with that.

Maybe you can do a rant about using non-Western influence in fantasy? Too often, it feels like the 'foreign' countries in bad fantasy are like 'here is the country that is Arabia-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off' and 'here is the country that is China-and-Japan-tossed-in-a-blender'. Or 'Eastern-style fantasy' that really means 'I watched Fushigi Yuugi/Saiyuki/Naruto/other anime series as research'.

Very much seconded. I always try to make my cultures non-European, but it's often very tough. It's hard to slip into other frames of mind sometimes.

I think I mentioned this once before, but I'd be very interested in seeing a rant about having cultures with differing views (they don't have to be at war - hell, my two main cultures aren't because I find their peaceful interactions more interesting), without painting one as Wrong and the other as Right - even if individual characters might think their side has it all worked out.

I really, really would love both of those too. Cultures running into each other is so fun, but so often amounts to 1) outright RAGH KILL clash, 2) preaching for one or both sides, with one in the "right", or 3) silly little differences, like how people made a big deal out of slang when I was going to England. It's much more fun to see the deeper differences mesh, tangle, and all those other things.

I've been browsing your rants on and off for a long time now, and ... did the unicorn in your userpic always wink? I could have sworn it used to be still.

Suggestions for rants? I have none - I'm still reading my way through all the ones you've already written. :D

I think the unicorn was bobbing its head previously. *shrugs*

I've not yet read all of them (they're tough thought-fodder and depressing as often as inspiring), but did you do a rant on architecture before? That could be interesting.

What about organized crime? I think it's something that should/could be used more often in fantasy, but not if it's just a generic Italian mafia sort of thing.

Try reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by....I forget actually (it's upstairs!) Lots and lots of *very* organised crime in that.
