The Talk

Sky had just left Jack’s room when he was ambushed. He hadn’t really been paying attention to his surroundings. Instead he had been idly (Not dreamily, he told himself firmly) replaying the last few hours in his head. When he saw a flash of yellow in his peripheral vision, he looked up to discover he was surrounded by Z, and every single one of her wore a very determined look.

Jack was almost asleep when the ambush hit him. Sky had just left him with a kiss and a promise to see him at breakfast, and Jack felt content and sleepy. Suddenly the door whooshed open to reveal Syd and Bridge. Bridge looked sheepishly apologetic, but Syd looked very serious.

Without preamble, Z - the one blocking access to his quarters - asked, “What are your intentions toward my brother?”

Sky just stared at her for a few minutes. When the question finally processed he responded with a query of his own, “Excuse me?”

Syd tossed her hair irritably, “You heard me, what are your intentions toward Sky?”

Jack looked quickly at the door, but decided against trying to phase through Bridge. So he went with Plan B and played dumb. “I’m not sure I know what you mean.”

Z, all of them, narrowed their eyes at him, and Sky was uncomfortably aware that all of his escape routes were blocked. He resisted the urge to duck into a defensive crouch. He wasn’t afraid of Z. Nope, not at all.

“Come on, don’t pull that crap with me. Jack is getting serious about you, and I want to know what you mean to do about it?”

Jack grinned like an idiot. “Sky’s getting serious about me?” he asked, completely ignoring the second part of Syd’s statement.

Syd apparently heard something in his voice that she approved of, because she relaxed slightly. “Yes, he is. He doesn’t do this casually.” Then remembering her mission, she glared again.

Sky’s smile faded under the renewed glare, and he chose his words carefully. “I don’t do this casually either. I’m not just playing with him, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“That’s part of what I’m asking,” Z confirmed. “We’ve been through a lot. He’s been through a lot. I don’t want to see him get hurt.”

“I don’t want to see him get hurt either,” Jack said irritably. Syd continued to stare at him. Jack sighed and pressed on, “What do you want me to say?  There are no guarantees in life, especially for the Power Rangers. I can’t promise you that he won’t get hurt. I can’t promise you that this won’t end.”

Sky paused to compose his thoughts. “What I can promise is that I’ll make him as happy as I can, for as long as he’ll let me. He deserves that.”

Z smiled warmly at him and reduced herself back to one. “That’s all I wanted to hear,” she said happily.

“Can I get some sleep now?” Jack asked grumpily.

Syd started to leave, but turned back at the door. “Jack, you deserve it too.”

Sky waited until he was safely in his room and then smiled.
