In my teen years, that part of the tradition intimidated me quite a bit. But I am so happy now that I'm older, because it means that there are so many valid ways to be Jewish.
When I see injustice, I try to maintain my childlike reaction of “this is horrible! What can I do about it!” instead of giving way to cynicism and accepting the inequity.
It is hard, and I don't always succeed. Especially when the answers I get back are often "give organization X money that I don't have!" or "put something up on Facebook that seems more about looking self-righteous before my friends than actually doing anything!" But it's good that we keep going. :)
Thank you! There's something I find so appealing about the story of everyone feeling perfectly free to yell at God once he enters the debate. Two of us, three opinions. :P
Thank you! I think it's a healthy tradition for me. We all have different sets of questions, so why shouldn't we be allowed to answer them differently?
