We have compared some notes. Her case was not quite as bad as mine--she had surgery before there was any macular involvement--and she had a really good outcome. If I recall correctly, she got to wear contact lenses again after 8 or 9 months and nearly all of her vision was restored, with just minor distortion. It was nice to talk to someone for whom this had not gone terribly wrong. The other people I know who have had retinal detachments had additional complications.

A couple years ago, my husband had a massive vitreous hemorrhage in his left eye due to diabetic retinopathy. In less than a week, his retina became 70% detached and required immediate surgery. The surgery was followed by two weeks of face down recovery so that the silicone oil could act as a splint and hold the newly attached retina in place. There was so much scar tissue that he is now virtually blind in his left eye and can only see shapes and movement. He continues to have periodic hemorhages in his good eye and we live in constant fear that the right retina might detach as well.
People who take their vision for granted should be immediately punched in the face.
