Have we really dumbed down America so much that we need a website to calculate square footage so that one can purchase an appropriate amount of paint?

I think it's a great idea - very cool page. :)

But then the last time I painted walls was about... eighteen years ago maybe. I would either buy too much or too little paint, so this would be a good tool to make sure I bought the right amount.

This is the way I look at it. You know how long your walls are and how tall they are and multiply the length times width and add up the four walls. Gallons are in and around 400 square feet depending on how heavy you lay it on. Still, 400 is a good number to work with and you're either close and pray or over a gallon and buy two. And woodwork? That is the same thing! Length times witdth and add it all up. Basic math skills that EVERYONE should have if they are graduated from high school!! How hard is it to do basic math???

Yikes, well, I respect that you have a strong opinion here, but look at it from my point of view. Sure, I can do basic math, I actually balance my checkbook (crazy!), and I can add fractions and such (cooking and baking skills), but square footage and wall/ceiling paint calculations would baffle me. This may be one of those "try to see it from a newb's point of view" sort of scenarios. Believe it or not, this shit does not come as easily to everyone as it does to you. :p

But, I can see you are passionately hating the idea of a tool that teaches others how to do basic math. Hah!

It's not hating on the tool, hardly. To my mind, it's length times width, and you arrive at a number. Add them up. If they are more than 400 square feet (and every can will tell you 350-400 square feet, just read! :), then it's easy peasy. Buy a quart or a gallon, or more to cover.

But, I guess, this is one thing you and I will have different viewpoints on. :) :) :)

Ooohhh, this page could be useful!

If I, err, did any home-stuff myself.

You need not use those precious hands of yours which are much more suited to other labor-doctoring and surgery! You can hire "people" for this!
