it has occurred to me lately that i have a lot to learn from my dog. as i get to know him (and us in relation to one another better), he is teaching me some valuable lessons about how to navigate your way through a sometimes scary but always adventurous world. how to pick friends and avoid conflict, and how to celebrate the simple things that fetch ( Read more... )

I have a large black shepherd named Luna. She is very peaceful but if looks could bite....she could chomp a good size hole. LOL
She is getting old and has hip problems so isn't as ferocious looking as she used to be but since moving into town I have had several persons not approach the house while she is on the porch.
We have had her since she was a baby but she has never liked the UPS delivery people. funny
I look forward to meeting your Nagual.

He sounds like a great dog and you sound like you are a great owner. My dog is a small dog, a Min Pin, and he also was a shelter dog and is a tripod. He also has the habit of sometimes, out of nowhere, lunging and growling at strangers. I have not really found a pattern, at least you have a pattern, even if it is weird or embarrassing. It is true that dogs can be conditioned to dislike or fear people of certain races, a certain sex, certain type of clothing, way of walking -- all of it. So, it must have to do with his past experiences, and certainly is not the same as human racism. I think he can be deconditioned in time, I hope. I am no expert and I'm still working on my dog lunging every now and then. Again, with Ziggy, my dog, there is no pattern really -- and it could be anyone. In a way, this is even more disconcerting since I am never sure ( ... )
