And thus my first week of teaching a class all by myself is ended. It was a success! But now I'm really tired. It didn't help that I had something going on every night of the week (choir Monday, Brooke Fraser concert Tuesday, sports class Wednesday, dinner with John Meade Thursday). On top of that, I had to be at school yesterday by 7:45, but ( Read more... )

Seriously, how do you say "crotchets"?

I'm not sure how serious you are about the idea of slipping this girl some fruits and veggies, but I think it's a bad idea (and kind of idealistic to think that her grades would improve because she ate an orange or apple or stalk of celery). It could show favoritism. It could be construed (by her) as kind of condescending; you saw what she was eating and decided *for her* that it wasn't good enough. I don't know- it just doesn't seem like a great idea, although I really do understand the desire to help her.

What about, if instead of slipping her some fruit once in awhile, you brought in a class treat? Put together a fruit and veggie tray or something because then everyone gets an opportunity for some extra vitamins and fiber in their diet and you are helping her, as well. Oh. Wait - make sure health codes allow it, as well.

Right, of course I wouldn't actually give a student fruits and vegetables, because a) it's so not related to music, b) I don't really want to spend that money out of my own pocket, c) health codes/rules, etc. And I don't really think that one vegetable on one day will directly impact her performance. I'd like her to eat a more balanced and complete diet overall, every day, but of course I can't control that ( ... )

Oh yeah, and it's pronounced "KRAWT-chet". Totally hideous word, and it makes no sense. I prefer the good old logical American terms!

I'm excited that you get to start a vocal jazz group! Treble Makers really must be gaining in popularity if we have a tribute band! I'm also glad to hear Kirby Shaw's popularity as an arranger is not diminished on the other side of the globe ( ... )

I agree with all previous comments and would add that even just a conversation with someone that she admires (i.e. you) could have a huge impact on her. If she just wants someone to talk to and spend time with just chatting with her could show her that someone is really interested in what she has to say. When i was in the faculty dance concert for jen, we did a baseball dance with a bunch of kids from the community. There was this girl jessica who I barely knew but at one practice after I had missed the previous one, she said that she had missed me. missed me? I never even talked to her how could she miss me? well apparently she did and since then at every performance she would find me and ask me all sorts of questions and I would just sort of talk randomly about my life and things I thought a 10-yr old girl would be interested in. And then at the end of the shows she came up to me crying because she would miss me so much ( ... )

You must REALLY like James if you can spell his last name properly! :)

Seriously, though, yeah, you're right. The best I can do is offer to be an influence and if she decides to let me be one, great, and if not, well, then at least I haven't intruded and presumed. And don't apologize for long comments - I like them!
