Lovely post and I don't have much to add really. Except that I never saw 'Welcome to the Hellmouth' until post-Chosen. The first episode I saw was 'The Witch' - which also did the trick! ;)
(And I just uploaded this icon today. Just so pretty.)
Well, this post was meant to be a "wow. omg so kewwwllll!" rather than anything serious. It was just a lot of fun to watch. Like learning all over again why I watched (minus Spike, of course). The icon is very pretty. Who made it?
God, I haven't seen this season since it was first aired in the UK. I watched the first two seasons on TV then took a big hiatus, and never discovered fandom at all when the show was still on TV - fond memories :)
And woah, Luke and the Master’s intense distorted religiosity.
I remember what a huuuuge deal it was when Spike and Dru turned up and dispensed with the Annointed One in S2. Such a bloody relief! I was always going to like 'em after that.
Yeah, I pretty much got into the show as it aired on NZ tele, but fandom later. (That long ago, huh!) I remember what a huuuuge deal it was when Spike and Dru turned up and dispensed with the Annointed One in S2. Yeah, the Annoying One. Spike and Dru were supposed to be cool and disposable, but somehow turned into very, very indispensable characters! :)
That's pretty nifty too! I do a lot of stalking at icon communities (which I haven't done of late unfortunately) because I am completely inept at making icons myself.
Oh, thank you so much for writing this. I haven't been able to watch 'Welcome to the Hellmouth' for a long time, mostly because when Buffy bumps into Xander in the school corridor and her stake falls from her bag... Well that and Giles slamming the 'Vampyr' book on the counter, I just want to grab her and hide her somewhere safe until all the bad things to come her way have disappeared.
But I loved reading this, and now I want to go back and see some of those things, instead of seeing a young girl about to take on the world and lose many of her loved ones in the process.
::hugs you back:: And then some. And then some more. But you know why? Right? ::more hugs:: Glad this did a bit of cheering. Season 1 is a bit of a tonic in that regard, because Buffy was so happy and keen. I guess, though, tribulation shapes a person, so maybe her struggles defined her and made her stronger for it. And just because ::a few more hugs::
Oh, back when Buffy had cheeks, not just cheekbones! I never saw Buffy in anything but reruns, except for season seven. Going back to watch those episodes is like looking at one's own high school photos.
The character of Darla, I think, needs for the fans to do some mind contortion. I mean, how she went from the haughty sire of the flashy backs to the schoolgirl minion of the Master would probably make some good fanfic. It'd be a windy road but I think you could get there.
Oh, back when Buffy had cheeks, not just cheekbones! Heh. Exactly. Going back to watch those episodes is like looking at one's own high school photos. That's a neat way of putting it. It's half-way between embarrassing and nostalgic (depending on your perspective, of course). It'd be a windy road but I think you could get there. Gah. Don't tempt me.... *g*
