Moments after Slughorn has already begun welcoming the sixth years back to Hogwarts, hoping they've had a good summer, James Potter walks in.
His bag is slung haphazardly over his shoulder, and his hair looks its usual appropriate windsweptness.
He almost considered not going to class at all, considered dropping Potions just like Sirius did. But McGonagall's voice in his head kept his feet moving forward, because he knew she was going to nag him every single bloody mealtime if he didn't go and he really didn't want to deal with that.
"Ah, hello Mr Potter. I was afraid you weren't going to make it," Slughorn says as James finds an empty spot by the musty bookshelves.
Unfortunately, it is nearest the Slytherin students (who all give him severe, dark looks), whom the rest of the class seems to have smartly moved away from.
He notes Snivellus' greasy, git-like face amongst them.
"Sorry, sir," James says.
"It really is no problem at all. Now, as I was saying ..."
Lily glances across at him for just a second, and then forces her attention back to Professor Slughorn.
" ... I've prepared a bit of a preview for you all. These are all Potions you should be able to make after completing your NEWTs. Something to look forward to, eh?"
He lifts the lid off a cauldron that appears to contain nothing but boiling water. "Let's make it sporting -- can someone other than Miss Evans or Mr Snape tell me what this is?"
Lily does look at Severus then, just for a second, out of habit, and in reaction to their names being paired. He's staring back at her, and she's the one who drops her eyes back to the cauldron, as Jeremy Flourish identifies the Veritaserum.

And here he's been so good at not paying her any mind until now.
He opens his Potions textbook and starts scanning its contents for lack of anything better to do.
It really sucks not having his best friend around in this class.

"Now," Slughorn says, moving to the next cauldron, "what about this one?"
There's a quiet plop from the thick potion as a bubble breaks the surface.
"That's disgusting," Juliet mutters, and Lily is rather inclined to agree with her.
"Anyone?" Slughorn asks again. "Mr Snape?"
"Polyjuice Potion, Professor," Severus says. "It allows the drinker to assume the shape of another person."
