Grimm and the Other

There are many many reasons why I love Grimm. It's great writing, awesome characters and acting, wonderful world building, the mix of fantasy and a police procedural. (what? there's a reason I love spn eps that have the Winchesters run into cops you know ( Read more... )

Great rant! You know, I was hesitant to get into Grimm because I'm not big on procedurals (and even so, I find Nick to be a bit bland), but I dig the world building they're doing, and the symbolism works for the exact reasons you list.

the more I watch Grimm, the more I realize how much of what I loved about either Buffy or Angel, came from him, rather than from Whedon.

As for Nick, he's my fave char on the show, so I guess I have to disagree on the 'bland' thing. I love his subtle humor, and how rare a character like him is becoming. You know an actual decent non-arrogant guy who isn't perfect but always tries to do the right thing.

I don't always mind anti-heroes, but it's just so nice to have a show where the lead(s) aren't anti-heroes.

Who is "he"?

Monroe is my favorite character, but I like Nick, and I much prefer him over anti-hero types. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I like a little angst. I just worry Nick'll be the exact same guy by the end of the series, and I like my protagonists to grow and change.

What's Nick's major issue from season one? He wants to propose to a woman he already lives with, and he has this secret. That's okay, I just don't feel it's big enough. Even discovering his mom's alive hasn't done too much to him.

Sorry, David Greenwalt.

And I think that Nick's relative lack of angst and utter lack of 'manpain' is actually refreshing*g*

(though admittedly my other fave show is Supernatural, so I guess I get most of the angst I need on that show*eg*)

As for Nick growing, I feel he's going from being naive, and maybe even a bit excited about finding out he's a Grimm, to realizing that being a Grimm may not mean what he thought it would. That his ancestors might not have been the heroes he's been led to believe. The show keeps giving both Nick and us, glimpses of what past Grimms were really like, both through the reactions of wesens to him, and through the journal. (not just the massacre of those turtle creatures, but things like last week's wesen, whom the book said was sedated so they could burn him alive, when it really wasn't necessary. The angst could be in how he deals with that heritage and his growth in becoming a better kind of Grimm, one who doesn't just cut off heads or kills wesens and thus overall redeeming the Grimms.

YES

I completely agree with you on all of this. I love the complexity of the universe they're building, the idea of the Wesen's history of being oppressed, not only by the Grimms but also by the royal families, with the Werrat and the Resistance and all of this, and how it all ties in and is paralleled with Nazi oppression in the last century... I just love how complicated it is, the ethical and moral questions it raises, all of it.

And I agree with the other commenter who said they find Nick a bit bland, but I love so many of the other characters so much that it makes up for it. :P LOL I don't dislike Nick, and I'll admit, the more he develops his Grimm skills and seems to be getting a little darker, the more I like him ;) lol

hmm, I don't need Nick to be dark, I love it every single time when he arrests a wesen instead of killing them. But then Nick has been my fave character from the start so...

Oh, when I say dark, I don't mean like, *evil* dark. :P

I just mean, the way his skills seem to be developing, and he seems to be becoming more comfortable with his role, etc, just sort of becoming less "naive, clueless little baby!Grimm" and more "genuinely dangerous force to be reckoned with Grimm" :P
