Title: Fez Kitties, Part the First
Fandom/'verse: Fez Kitties
Rating/Warnings: Kitties! And kittens! Cute!
Summary: (656 words) The first kitten to open his eyes finds more than he expected, and more than he remembered...

In an average house, in an average neighborhood, two mother kitties both had kittens on the same day. Their humans gathered around oohing and ahing and made quite a fuss, gathering the mother kitties and their kittens into a big box. The mother kitties would rather the humans didn't bother their kittens, but their humans did provide warm blankets, food, and water so the kitties forgave them. For the next few days the kitties settled into a routine of sleeping, feeding, and bathing. It was an average house, in an average neighborhood, but one of the mother kitties and one of the kittens were something quite different from average.

Yancy sat up by his mother's side and realized something was not quite right. For one thing he could remember being a much older kitty named Snowy. Thinking about it he could also remember being a rather pampered kitty named Princess. He could remember being a kitten several times before. Tumbling blindly with other kittens, struggling to find a spot and feed, and the sudden change in the world when he had opened his eyes. Eyes... Slowly, carefully Yancy opened his eyes. It was late in the evening and only a little light came in through the windows. But he could make out his fellow kittens and his mother's body, and as he turned his head he found himself looking eye to eye with his mother.

"Eyes open already? I see too that you remember now."

"What?" He looked closer at his mother and for a moment saw several kitties at the same time. A black cat with a white spot on her head named Snowdrop, who was his mother. With gray and orange stripes another kitty gazed down at him and he knew she was his mother. A calico kitty, an orange kitty, another with a tan spot around one eye, each he knew with absolute certainty was his mother. Closing his eyes for a moment he reopened them and saw only the first black kitty with the white spot. "I'm a kitten? Again? How, how many times have I..."

"Lived? It's hard to say little one. As you become more comfortable with the memories you may be able to count your lives. It's rare for any to remember before their seventh life."

Yancy was about to ask another question when something else caught his attention. Something round and red upon his mother's head. He could not remember seeing anything like it on a kitty before, certainly not worn willingly. As he stared she reached up touching it with one paw.

"Yes my kitten, I wear this proudly and I am proud to say that you have one as well."

Reaching up with one of his own paws Yancy found she was right. Some strange object that he barely noticed on his head even as he felt it with his paw.

"It is a symbol. The humans cannot see them, but they they have a name for something that looks much like it. They call them fezzes."

"If they can't see them, how...?"

"Could they name them? They can't see ours and their fezzes are without the meaning of ours. Ours are a sign of our maturity. Only a kitty who has become aware of her many lives gains a fez. And with it awakens to power and duty."

Yancy sat up straighter and looked around. One fez sat upon his head, another on his mother's, but the other mother and none of the kittens wore one. "None of them remember?"

"None of them in this life. For now, in this house only you and I are truly awake. Rest for now. We have little time, but there is enough to rest and gather your strength."

"But I'm not ti--" Yancy's body betrayed him with a long yawn ending with a squeaked out mew. Reluctantly he gave in and cuddled up to his mother's side.
