Yeah, I was picturing the scene in my head, so I was a bit choked up as I was working on it. I think this version is better than the original one, which I ended up not using because I was convinced it had become too overwrought. But yeah, in the end this scene is about a man who has had the ground yanked out from underneath him. But at least my notes about Thadeus say that he's a happy kid later on. So Charles is presumably doing better too.
I remember Holly Lisle talking about how while working on her Dragons series, she was writing a scene and was becoming horrified at what she was writing but at the same time absolutely knew that it was exactly what the character would do. She said that when she finished the scene she had to stop writing and just cry.
