I suspect that this was partly influenced by recently rereading some of
jeriendhal's Terinu fanfic. As we have here a science fiction romance that involves pirates. I found myself wondering if Madeline and the Red Vixen would get along with each other. :) His stories are good, enough to have picked up two of his collections in print for money. If you haven't had the chance to read any of his stories yet, then go give them a try.
The sharp cracks of rifle shots chased us as we ran for the ship. The shots fired by the crew passing perilously close to us as they tried to give cover. "It would have been nice if they could have waited a little longer. We were almost to the 'I do' part."
Madeline glanced over with a grin. "Not to worry Charles, we still have the rings. We'll just have to find another priest."
With one final rush we charged through the boarding hatch, slapping the controls as we passed through. Madeline made a quick call to the bridge and moments later I could feel the drives kick in.
One of the crew members looked me over and raised a brow, "Bringing a prisoner along captain?" I suppose it wasn't too surprising a question considering that I was in my finest officers dress uniform.
Fortunately it was her friendly laugh that answered the question. "He's not a prisoner James, he's my fiancé."
If anything the man seemed even more surprised by that than the first sight of my fancy uniform. Madeline waved for both of us to follow her as she made for the bridge.
I hated to be the pessimist, but the troops that tried to arrest us showed that the cover story I'd tried to put in place had failed. Every navy ship in the system had to be converging on us, probably even before we saw the first of the troops.
Arriving on the bridge some of the crew let out a cheer at the sight of their captain. Putting a hand on my shoulder she smiled and pointed to the navigation chart. Looking over it a smile came to me as well. We would hit the FTL limit minutes before the net could be closed around us.
"We're going to make it." Her grin was proving infectious, driving out the doubts I had started to feel.
"Charles, I told you when you offered me your ring. You'd been set to catch me and instead I caught your heart. Today your Navy tried to catch us and failed. I've never been caught and I don't intend to start today."
